Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Eagles make the plays in overtime to outlast Muskies 106-95

Eric Nygaard (Sr.-Plymouth, Wis.) scored a career-high 23 points but Edgewood College scored the final nine points of the game to outlast Lakeland University 106-95 in overtime Wednesday night in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference game at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.

The Muskies sent the game to overtime on a three-pointer by Pat McDonald (Sr.-Port Washington, Wis.) with 16 seconds in regulation. The Eagles in overtime made the final surge in a game of momentum swings, though, and gained a split of the teams' season series.

Edgewood (4-10 overall, 4-5 NACC) never trailed in overtime, but it was a two-point game with 1 minute 36 seconds left after Nygaard's driving layup made it 97-95. The Eagles' Sy Staver delivered a blow, though, draining a three-pointer near the end of the shot clock to make it 100-95 with 1:06 left.

The Muskies (6-8 overall, 4-5 NACC) never got closer the rest of the way, as Edgewood made six free throws in the final 42 seconds to close the game out and avenge an 83-69 loss to Lakeland at home on Nov. 27.

The Muskies again were competitive in defeat and came back from deficits twice in the second half, including a rally from 10 down early in the half to take an eight-point lead. Lakeland also fought back again after trailing by four with just over a minute left, with McDonald's pull-up three-pointer tying the game at 88-88 just before the end of regulation.

As a whole, though, Lakeland was unable to match Edgewood's hot shooting throughout, tailing off late in the first half and again in overtime. The Eagles hit 55.1% from the floor, making 38 of 69 shots, including 5 of 7 in overtime, and also hit 20 of 22 from the free throw line (90.9%).

The Muskies shot 44.3%, making 35 of 79 field goals, including 12 of 33 from three-point range. Lakeland hit eight three-pointers in shooting 51.5% in the second half, clawing back from a 52-42 deficit to lead 78-70 with 7:15 left after Trenton Nickel (So.-Kiel, Wis.) hit a three-pointer, but the Eagles bounced back with a 16-4 run to lead by four late in regulation.

Lakeland got off to a good start and led by six on two occasions in the first half, including at 34-28 after Zach Hasenstein (So.-Sheboygan, Wis.) converted a three-point play with 7:07 left in the half. The Muskies missed 11 of their final 13 shots of the half, though, as Edgewood finished on a 12-2 run to take a 47-40 halftime lead.

Nygaard scored 11 points in the first and finished with 23, making 8 of 13 from the field and 5 of 7 from the line to best by one his previous career high. He also added six rebounds. Hasenstein also scored 18, McDonald added 17 and Shakur Jinad (Jr.-Chicago, Ill.) chipped in 13 off the bench. McDonald also paced the team with seven rebounds and five assists.

Jake Negus led Edgewood with 24 points, including 11 of 12 from the free throw line. Ben Seefeld also scored 17, Emil Radisevic added 15 points, eight rebounds and six blocked shots, and all five Eagles starters scored in double figures.

The Muskies go back on the road Saturday when they travel to face Milwaukee School of Engineering at 4:15 p.m. in Milwaukee.
