MADISON, Wis. –
Omar Castillo (
So.-Yuma, Ariz.) scored his first two goals of the season but Edgewood College stung the Lakeland University men's soccer team with a second half comeback to defeat the Muskies 3-2 Wednesday night at Breese Stevens Field.
The Eagles scored three times in the second half, wiping out a 2-0 halftime lead for Lakeland and scoring the go-ahead goal with less than four minutes remaining in the match. Edgewood kept the Muskies (3-12-1 overall, 0-7 NACC) winless in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play with another close loss in a season that now has seven losses by two goals or less, including three by a single goal.
Castillo found the back of the net twice in the match's first 18 minutes, 7 seconds. He scored first in the 13th minute, depositing a crossing pass from
Lizandro Jimenez (
So.-Milwaukee, Wis.) for his first goal. He added a second goal less than seven minutes later when
John Bentler (
Sr.-Seattle, Wash.) sent on a free kick that
Andres Gonzalez (
Fr.-Jamul, Calif.) gave one touch to Castillo, who headed the ball in for a 2-0 Lakeland lead.
The Muskies carried the 2-0 lead into the second half, when Edgewood (6-8-1 overall, 3-4 NACC) got on the board in the 55th minute when Sean Surtees converted a penalty kick. The Eagles scored the equalizer not long after, as Zander Hartberg scored in the 65th minute to tie it.
Edgewood kept the pressure on in the second half, and it paid off late. Surtees scored his second of the match with 3:34 to play, as his shot in the box deflected off a Lakeland defender and into the net.
Ryoto Kinoshita (
Sr.-Kanagawa, Japan) led Lakeland's attack with six shot attempts. The Eagles outshot the Muskies 20-15, though both teams finished with eight shots on goal each.
Aaron Smith (
So.-Lake Geneva, Wis.) made four saves in goal for Lakeland.
Lakeland is on the road Saturday when it travels to face Aurora University at 1 p.m. as the first part of a NACC men's/women's doubleheader, with the Muskies and Spartans women's teams to meet immediately after.
