Lakeland/Eureka Game Notes  PDF
Lakeland University will look to stretch its win streak to four and stay in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference football race when it travels to face Eureka College Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. at Eureka's Pete FioRito Stadium at McKinzie Field.
The Muskies will go for their second straight win over the Red Devils, one year after being the lone NACC team to defeat Eureka in its first year in the conference. Lakeland prevailed over Eureka 56-55 last year in a wild game, one of the most memorable ones in school history and the highest-scoring game in Lakeland football annals.
The Muskies (4-3 overall, 3-1 NACC) won their third straight in conference last week, defeating Wisconsin Lutheran 39-6. Lakeland withstood four turnovers and some nervous moments in the first half, taking the lead just before halftime and pulling away outscoring the Warriors 26-0 in the second half.
Larry Rivers rushed for 211 yards and became the Muskies' first 1,000-yard back in 24 years and the Lakeland defense was stout, holding Lutheran to 119 yards of total offense, including 38 yards rushing.
Eureka (3-4 overall, 1-3 NACC) lost a tough 17-14 decision at Benedictine last week in ugly weather conditions, as the Eagles kicked the go-ahead field goal with 1:42 left in the game. Joe Hughes rushed 34 times for 171 yards, helping Eureka control possession for 36:25 in rainy and windy conditions. It was third straight close game in NACC play for Eureka, which lost to Concordia Chicago by a point the week before and defeated Wisconsin Lutheran in overtime Oct. 12.
Saturday's game will be the 47th meeting all-time between the schools, which makes it the Muskies' third-most played opponent all-time. Lakeland holds a 33-12-1 lead in the all-time series and has won the last 13 matchups. The two teams met every year except for one from 1962-2007, missing only 1979, and the two were members together of the Illini-Badger Football Conference from 1976-2007 and also the Gateway Conference in the 1960s. Eureka's last win over the Muskies was a 47-45 win Nov. 4, 1995.Â
