Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Wheaton surges late to foil solid Lakeland effort against ranked team

WHEATON, Ill. – Megan Will (Jr.-Lake Mills, Wis.) scored a game-high 20 points but nationally ranked Wheaton (Ill.) College went on a big run in the second half to defeat the Lakeland University women's basketball team 59-38 Tuesday night in a non-conference game.

The Muskies led for a good share of the game until Wheaton went on a 30-4 run over the third and fourth quarters. Lakeland dropped to 0-2 on the season after falling to the team ranked 14th in the D3hoops.com top 25 poll.

The Thunder (2-0 overall) turned a close game heavily in their favor in a span of less than 10 minutes. Trailing 31-28 after a basket by Morgan Zenon (So.-Twin Lakes, Wis.) with 4 minutes, 51 seconds left in the third quarter, Wheaton scored 13 straight points over the next three minutes and led 41-33 at the third quarter break.

The hosts continued their run in the fourth quarter, including another 14 straight points that ended with a layup by Jordan Myroth making it 58-35 with 4:29 left in the game. The Muskies finished up being outscored 18-5 in the final quarter.

Lakeland was more than competitive for the game's first 26 minutes. In fact, the Muskies led for all but the final 14 seconds of the first half, darting out to a 9-2 lead in the first quarter and leading Hannah Frazier scored just before halftime to give Wheaton a 20-19 lead.

The Thunder took a three-point lead early in the second half, but Lakeland answered to go back ahead. Amanda Majewski (Sr.-Peshtigo, Wis.) hit a pair of three-pointers, with the second putting the Muskies back ahead 27-24, a lead they would hold until late in the quarter when Wheaton began its run.

Will finished making 6 of 17 field goals and 8 of 9 from the free throw line. She also added a team-high seven rebounds. Majewski also added nine points plus six rebounds.

The Muskies stayed in the game despite shooting a frigid 23.3% from the field, making 10 of 43 shots. Lakeland did make 15 of 17 from the foul line (88.2%) and limited Wheaton to 38.6% shooting for the game (22 of 57), including 25% in the first half before the Thunder shot 56% in the second half (14 of 25).

Lakeland is back home Friday night when it hosts Ripon College at 7 p.m. at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
