APPLETON, Wis. – Lawrence University shot 64.3% in the first half and made 11 of 17 three-point attempts for the game and defeated the Lakeland University men's basketball team 92-73 Wednesday night in a non-conference game.
The Vikings set a scoring pace that the Muskies were unable to match as they dropped to 1-3 overall on the season. Lawrence also avenged an 88-81 loss to Lakeland in last year's season opener in a game that followed a similar script particularly at the start, when the Muskies opened scorching hot in building a huge lead before the Vikings fought back to make it close late.
Lawrence (2-0 overall) led almost the entire way in this one, trailing only briefly at 4-3 after a layup by
Jequan Pegeese (
Jr.-Beloit, Wis.) just over two minutes into the game. The Vikings took control for good with a 14-2 run that resulted in a 40-23 lead with 5 minutes, 17 seconds left in the first half and took a 46-34 lead into halftime.
The Muskies cut the margin below ten points one time early in the second half, when
Tony White (
Fr.-New Orleans, La.) hit the first of two free throws to trim Lawrence's lead to 51-42 with 16:04 left in the game. The Vikings fired back with 11 straight points to go ahead 62-42, and would lead by as many as 22 and no less than 12 the rest of the way.
Lawrence made 18 of 28 shots in the first half and finished the game shooting 53.2% (33 of 62). The Vikings also drained 64.7% of their three-point attempts, including 6 of 9 in the first half and 5 of 8 in the second half. Brad
Sendell scored 29 points and made 5 of 6 from long range, and Brandon
Danowski added 22 points and 19 rebounds as Lawrence
outrebounded Lakeland 45-37.
White scored 13 points off the bench to lead the Muskies, part of a solid effort by the bench that included 36 points total.
Eric Jordan (
Fr.-Chicago, Ill.) also added 10 points from the bench and
Brandon Rowe (
Fr.-Rio, Wis.) scored seven and added a game-high four steals.
Eddie Burnett (
So.-Chicago, Ill.) also scored 12 points and tied
Pegeese for team rebounding honors with six each. Lakeland shot 38.2% as a team, making 26 of 68 shots, but also struggled at the foul line, making 14 of 28 free throw tries (50.0%).
The Muskies are now idle until Thanksgiving weekend, when they will travel to face Benedictine University next Saturday, Nov. 30 at 2 p.m. in Lisle, Ill., in their Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference opener.
