MANITOWOC, Wis. –
Trenton Nickel (
Jr.-Kiel, Wis.) and
Sam Kaminski (Sr.-Sheboygan, Wis.) both established career highs off the bench and Lakeland University held off Holy Family College 84-78 Tuesday night in a non-conference men's basketball game.
Nickel scored a career-high 19 points and Kaminski added career bests of 12 points and 15 rebounds for his first career double-double. The two helped the Muskies win their third straight game and even their record at 4-4 on the season.
Lakeland and Holy Family (formerly Silver Lake College before a name change this fall) played a close game for the second straight season. The Muskies eked out an 80-77 win a year ago that was the closest ever in the series between the schools, and this time won a game where neither team led by more than seven points.
The Lakers (4-9 overall) led for much of the first half and well into the second half before Lakeland held the upper hand in the final 10 minutes. The Muskies took the lead on a bucket by
Greg Barber (
Jr.-Miami, Fla.) making the score 62-61 with 10:25 left in the game, and they would never trail again, though Holy Family would tie the score one more time at 71-71 with just over six minutes left.
Nickel heated up in the second half for the second time in three games, scoring 12 of his 19 points in the final 20 minutes. Nine points came in the final 5:35, including the go-ahead three-pointer with 5:35 left that put Lakeland ahead for good.
The Muskies received 47 points from their bench. Nickel made 6 of 9 shots from the field, including 3 of 4 from three-point range. He also hit all four of his free throw attempts. Kaminski made 5 of 8 from the floor and grabbed 15 of the Muskies' 41 rebounds as they held a slim 41-40 advantage on the boards. The senior center also added two assists.
Zach Hasenstein (
Jr.-Sheboygan, Wis.) added 11 points and
Jequan Pegeese (
Jr.-Janesville, Wis.) added ten points. Lakeland shot 42.7% (32 of 75), including 10-for-31 from three-point range (32.3%).
Tydarius Fish scored 19 points to lead four in double figures for Holy Family, which shot 41.9% (26 of 62) and hit 9 of 20 from long range (45.0%) but committed 16 turnovers.
Lakeland is back home Saturday when it will host Illinois Institute of Technology at 2 p.m. at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
