Zach Hasenstein (
Jr.-Sheboygan, Wis.) scored all 15 of his points in the second half and the Lakeland University men's basketball team continued its recent success in close games with a 74-71 win over Edgewood College Friday night at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
The Muskies played from behind most of the second half until the final four minutes but still won their fifth straight game, all five in the month of December, and the last four wins all coming by six points or less. Lakeland closes out 2019 at 6-4 overall and is now 4-1 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference.
The Muskies trailed by eight points with 7 minutes, 51 seconds left in the game but came back to take the lead for good on a three-pointer by Hasenstein making it 66-63 with 3:30 to play. Lakeland would lead the rest of the way, though Edgewood (2-6 overall, 2-3 NACC) got as close as one point on two occasions and had a three-point attempt to tie in the final seconds rim out.
Hasenstein finished the first half scoreless with just a single rebound on his stat line but finished the game with 15 points, eight rebounds and four assists. He scored six of the Muskies' first points out of halftime, including a jumper with 17:31 left for a 37-36 lead that would be Lakeland's last until the late going.
Edgewood would respond with seven straight points and built its biggest lead at 59-51. The Eagles would make just four of their final 18 shots, though.
Neither team led by more than nine points in a game that featured six ties and six lead changes. Lakeland took its largest lead early at 20-11 after a jumper by
Deonte Carlton (
Sr.-Green Bay, Wis.), but Edgewood followed with a 14-2 run to take the lead and would carry a slim 30-28 lead into halftime.
Jequan Pegeese (
Jr.-Beloit, Wis.) scored 21 points and added eight rebounds for Lakeland and
Carlos Campos (
Sr.-Janesville, Wis.) added 15 points.
Isaac Anderson (
Sr.-Linden, Wis.) also added a team-high nine rebounds plus four points. Lakeland shot 42.0% for the contest, making 29 of 69 shots, including 18 of 35 (51.4%) in the second half.
Ben Seefeld scored a game-high 28 points for Edgewood, which shot 37.3% (25 of 67) but outrebounded Lakeland 48-39. Avery Lyons also scored 13 and Jake Graf added 11 points plus 11 rebounds for the Eagles.
Lakeland is now idle until the new year. The Muskies' next game will be Jan. 4, 2020, with a trip to Milwaukee School of Engineering at 2 p.m. in Milwaukee.
