Carlos Campos (
Sr.-Janesville, Wis.) and
Trenton Nickel (
Jr.-Kiel, Wis.) took turns sparking the offense and the Lakeland University men's basketball team defeated Concordia University Chicago 89-76 Wednesday night at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
The Muskies held the Cougars to 31.3% shooting in the second half to win for the first time this season in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play. Lakeland improved to 2-4 overall and moved to 1-1 in conference play in just its second appearance of the season at home.
Campos scored 21 of his game-high 24 points in the first half, hitting four three-pointers as the Muskies stayed close through a back-and-forth first 20 minutes. The teams traded the lead 13 times and were tied on five other occasions before Lakeland took a slim 49-47 lead into the intermission.
Nickel scored all of his career-high 14 points in the second half as Lakeland never trailed in the final 20 minutes, taking control after the halftime break. The junior guard was scoreless until the 13 minutes, 10 seconds mark of the second half, when he hit the first of consecutive baseline pull-up jumpers that capped an 8-0 run to give the Muskies their largest lead of the game at 67-54.
Nickel would add two three-pointers, a tip-in and two free throws, scoring all 14 of his points in a span of eight minutes. He added two assists and keyed a big 34-15 advantage in bench points for Lakeland.
The Muskies also held a big advantage in turnovers, committing seven to Concordia's 20 turnovers. Lakeland turned that into a 17-9 edge in points off turnovers, and also finished with seven more field goal attempts and nine more foul shots than the Cougars (1-4 overall, 1-2 NACC).
Zach Hasenstein (
Jr.-Sheboygan, Wis.) added 11 points and eight rebounds and
Dionte Carlton (
Sr.-Green Bay, Wis.) and
Jequan Pegeese (
Jr.-Beloit, Wis.) also scored nine points each.
Isaac Anderson (
Sr.-Linden, Wis.) also chipped in seven points, eight rebounds and a team-high four assists.
Lakeland shot 41.6% for the game, making 32 of 77 field goals, including 19 of 37 in a fast-paced first half when both teams shot well. The Cougars also made 19 of 38 in the first half (50.0%) before cooling off to make just 10 of 31 in the final 20 minutes to shoot 41.4% for the game.
Jalen Meeks scored 22 points for Concordia while Landen Gladney added 15 points and 13 rebounds.
The Muskies are back on the road Saturday when they travel to face Marian University at 2 p.m. in Fond du Lac.
