FOND DU LAC, Wis. –
Amanda Majewski (
Sr.-Peshtigo, Wis.) scored a career-high 19 points and Lakeland University fought off a challenge from Marian University, holding on for a 56-53 win Saturday in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference women's basketball play.
The Muskies won their second straight game on the road, following up a win at Concordia University Wisconsin earlier in the week. Lakeland also defeated the Sabres for the ninth straight time, but received a fight this time in the closest game between the schools since Marian's last win in the series in Jan. 2015.
The Muskies (2-6 overall, 2-2 NACC) led most of the way, taking the lead early in the second quarter and never trailing again. Lakeland was unable to put away the hosts, though, as the Sabres rallied from a 12-point deficit late in the third quarter to get within a single possession four times in the fourth quarter.
The Muskies took their biggest lead at 38-26 on a Majewski three-pointer with 3 minutes, 36 seconds left in the third quarter. Marian (2-5 overall, 2-2 NACC) closed to within 42-37 by the end of the quarter, though, and were within three when Carley Wilson's layup made it 44-41 with 8:27 left in the game.
Lakeland was back ahead by seven after a three-point play by Majewski and a free throw by
Kacey Gardner (
So.-Evergreen Park, Ill.) on consecutive possessions made it 55-48 with 51 seconds left. The Sabres got a three-point play from Paris Harris, though, and got even closer after two missed free throws by the Muskies as Morgan Johnson's layup made it 55-53 with 13 seconds to play. Majewski split two foul shots with nine seconds left, though, and a tying three-point attempt by Claire Levendoski was off target as time expired.
Majewski made 7 of 18 shots, including three three-pointers, and bested her previous Muskies high of 18 set Jan. 10 against Concordia Chicago.
Megan Will (
Jr.-Lake Mills, Wis.) added 14 points and also pulled down a career-high 15 rebounds to go with three blocked shots.
Abby Nylund (
Jr.-Crystal Falls, Mich.) also scored eight points and added four assists and Gardner finished with five points, five assists and six steals.
Lakeland shot 29.0%, making 20 of 69 field goals, but forced the Sabres into 24 turnovers. Marian shot 33.9% (19 of 56) and outrebounded the Muskies 47-41.
Lakeland is idle until next Saturday, when it hosts Illinois Institute of Technology at 4:15 p.m. at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
