Eric Nygaard (
Sr.-Plymouth, Wis.) scored 22 points as part of a double-double and three seniors scored in double figures on Senior Day as the Lakeland University men's basketball team dominated Dominican University 91-54 in its season finale Saturday afternoon at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
Nygaard added 11 rebounds as part of his third double-double of the season,
Pat McDonald (
Sr.-Port Washington, Wis.) scored 19 points and
Garrett Duffin (
Sr.-Princeton, Ill.) added 14 points as the Muskies broke away at the end of the first half and won going away.
Lakeland finished the season with a 12-13 overall record and at 10-10 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference. The Muskies finished in a four-way tie for sixth in the conference standings but came out on the wrong end of tiebreakers and thus did not qualify for the six-team NACC Tournament.
Lakeland was in charge in almost every category, shooting 48.7% from the field (37 of 76) and 12 of 24 from three-point range (50.0%), winning the rebounding battle 48-35 and also finishing plus-nine in the turnover category.
The teams were close for a good share of the first half, and Dominican (3-22 overall, 3-17 NACC) even held an 18-15 lead after a three-pointer by Sean Ek with 11 minutes 9 seconds left in the half. The Muskies followed with a 22-2 run over the next seven minutes, with McDonald's layup making it 37-20.
Lakeland eventually took a 47-28 lead into halftime, and the margin grew to as much as 41 late in the second half. The fourth Muskies senior also got into the scoring act as four-year senior
Corey Allen (
Chicago, Ill.), playing in his first game of the season, scored his first points of the season with 7:57 to play.
Zach Hasenstein (
So.-Sheboygan, Wis.) also added 13 points to give Lakeland four players in double figures. Duffin also added six rebounds and McDonald led Lakeland with six assists, and
Trenton Nickel (
So.-Kiel, Wis.) added six points and five rebounds off the bench. Twelve different players in all scored for the Muskies.
Dennis Handy scored 14 points to lead Dominican, which shot 33.9% (21 of 62), including making just 13 of its final 48 shots after starting off making eight of its first 14.
