MILWAUKEE – Concordia University Wisconsin delivered a scorching shooting performance from start to finish and the Lakeland University women's basketball team saw its season end with a 90-63 loss in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Tournament semifinals.
The second-seeded Muskies ran up against a Concordia team that set a torrid pace, shooting 61.8% for the game, easily its best performance of the season. The No. 3 seed Falcons advanced to the tournament final Saturday night, while Lakeland saw its season end with a 20-6 record.
The Muskies defeated the Falcons twice in the regular season, with both wins coming in overtime, but Concordia came out making 12 of 16 shots in the first quarter in the teams' third meeting. The Falcons shot 75% over the first 10 minutes in building a 29-21 lead, and except for a brief spell in the second quarter CUW never really cooled off.
Lakeland stayed in the game with a big effort from
Megan Will (
So.-Lake Mills, Wis.), who scored 18 points in the first half, and
Rachel Hasko (
Jr.-Racine, Wis.) also scored eight points in the first half. Still, the Muskies only got as close as six in the second quarter, and Concordia stretched the lead to 46-34 at halftime.
The Falcons (19-8 overall) then scored the first seven points of the third quarter to pull ahead by 19, and Lakeland faced a significant uphill battle the rest of the way. The Muskies did close within 57-46 after
Miranda Jacobson (
Sr.-Felch, Mich.) hit a three-pointer with 3 minutes 46 seconds left in the third, but CUW followed that with a 10-0 run to finish the quarter and never led by less than 16 the rest of the way.
Will finished with 23 points, making 11 of 18 from the field, and also added six rebounds.
Kacey Gardner (
Fr.-Evergreen Park, Ill.) added 12 points, five rebounds and seven assists off the bench and Hasko and Jacobson both scored eight points each. Lakeland shot 35.7% (25 of 70), including 10-for-35 (28.6%) after making 15 of 35 (42.9%) in the first half.
Concordia finished making 34 of 55 shots, including 17 of 24 (70.8%) in the second half in pulling away, and far surpassed its previous best shooting mark of the season of 52.3% in a win over Illinois Tech on Dec. 29. Six players scored in double figures led by Baylee Barker with 17 points plus 12 rebounds. The Falcons also hit 7 of 16 from three-point range (43.8%) and won the rebounding battle 38-33.
The game was the final one for Lakeland seniors Jacobson and
Asia Danforth (
Seymour, Wis.), who finished their four-year careers as part of teams that won a total of 72 games, including a pair of 20-win seasons. Jacobson concluded her career with 1,037 career points as well as 645 rebounds and 209 assists, finishing as just the second player in program history to top 1,000 points, 500 rebounds and 200 assists.
The Muskies wrapped up a season that featured a pair of wins over Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference teams, as well as a 15-5 mark in the NACC with two wins over Concordia Wisconsin, the first time Lakeland topped CUW twice in a season since 2011-12.
