FORT MYERS, Fla. –Bethel (Minn.) University broke free for six runs over the final four innings and the Lakeland University baseball team fell by a 10-3 score Thursday in a single nine-inning game at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Games.
The Muskies scored three times over their final two at bats but dropped to 0-6 this season and on their spring break trip. Lakeland has two more contests left on its trip, including another nine-inning single Friday at 11 a.m. Central time (noon Eastern time) against Eastern Connecticut State University.
The Muskies were outhit just 10-9 in the game and received a 3-for-4 performance from freshman
Nathan Hemmerling (
Fr.-Riverside, Calif.).
Travis Regalado (
Sr.-Willcox, Ariz.) also added two hits.
The Muskies got their firest run in the eighth inning, when
Alberto Oliveras (
So.-Fort Myers, Fla.) singled with one down and eventually came around to score on a
Connor Hilburn (
Jr.-Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) single down the left field line.
Lakeland added two more runs in the bottom of the ninth.
Mezlan Myers (
Fr.-Bolingbrook, Ill.) was hit by a pitch,
Trevor Meier (
Jr.-Columbus, Mont.) doubled to put runners at second and third with nobody out and
Justin Wahl Adame (
So.-Riverside, Calif.) hit a sacrifice fly to score Myers.
Peyton Knoll (
Sr.-Linden, Mich.) then grounded out to shortstop to score Meier for the final run of the game.
Jordan Johnson (
Jr.-Riverton, Utah) started on the mound and went six innings with six hits and six runs allowed (five earned) with four strikeouts. Bethel's Marcus Krupke threw seven scoreless innings with four strikeouts to earn the win, while both Joey Fredrickson and Nick Kulseth drove in three runs each for the Royals, who were playing their season opener but went 32-11 last year and advanced to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
