FORT MYERS, Fla. –
Nathan Hemmerling (
Fr.-Riverside, Calif.) and
Connor Hilburn (
Jr.-Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) both had three-hit days but the Lakeland University baseball team lost twice to Aurora University in its home opener Sunday afternoon.
The Spartans scored six times in the top of the first inning on the way to a 12-1 victory in seven innings in the first game. Aurora followed that up with a 7-2 win in the second game as the Muskies lost their first Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference doubleheader.
Hemmerling had two hits in the first game and Hilburn added two more in the second on a frigid afternoon where temperatures only reached the low 30s and a strong northwest wind made it feel even colder.
Travis Regalado (
Sr.-Willcox, Ariz.) and
Lino Figueroa (
So.-Westchester, Ill.) both drove in runs with singles, but Lakeland (0-10 overall) had just one extra-base hit with the wind blowing in hard all day.
Jordan Johnson (
Jr.-Riverton, Utah) started the opening game and pitched two-thirds of an inning before giving way to
Carter Chapman (
So.-Costa Mesa, Calif.), who pitched five innings and allowed seven hits and three runs while striking out four.
Mason Pechy (
Jr.-Diamond Bar, Calif.) started the second game and pitched well, allowing five hits and three runs (one earned) in 5 2/3 innings with four strikeouts.
Alberto Oliveras (
So.-Fort Myers, Fla.) singled in the first game to extend his hitting streak to nine games to start the season. He saw that streak end in the second game, going 0-for-4 as the Muskies posted just five hits against three Aurora pitchers.
Davis Purviance finished with five hits and six RBIs on the day for the Spartans (13-3 overall). Will King earned the win in the first game, throwing six innings and allowing six hits and one run. Carter Turnquist threw 6 1/3 innings in the second game and allowed three hits and one run to get the win.
Lakeland is in action again Monday when it travels to face Benedictine University for a NACC doubleheader at noon in Lisle, Ill.
