MILWAUKEE – The Lakeland University baseball team earned its first doubleheader sweep of the season and continued to show well in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference with a pair of wins over Wisconsin Lutheran College Saturday afternoon.
The Muskies won the first game by a 7-2 score, and in the second outlasted the Warriors 3-1 in 12 innings. Lakeland improved to 4-17 overall but also is now 4-6 in the NACC after winning four of its past six conference matchups.
The Muskies received quality pitching performances in both games, allowing just three runs over 21 innings.
Nathan Hemmerling (
Fr.-Riverside, Calif.) pitched seven strong innings in the opener, allowing four hits and two runs with four strikeouts, and
Carter Chapman (
So.-Costa Mesa, Calif.),
Noah Suissa (
So.-Belmont, Calif.) and
Mason Pechy (
Jr.-Diamond Bar, Calif.) combined to allow only a single unearned run in the second game.
Lakeland responded after falling behind 2-0 in the first inning of game one, scoring three runs each in the third and fourth innings.
Travis Regalado (Sr.-Willcox, Ariz.) twice singled in runs and
Jack Banks (
Jr.-Mountain View, Calif.) and
Hunter Frisk (
Fr.-Manteca, Calif.) both added RBI singles as the Muskies scored six times on four hits and also took advantage of four WLC errors.
A Hemmerling RBI single in the fourth inning of the second game looked like it just might stand up to the end until Wisconsin Lutheran (9-14 overall, 2-7 NACC) tied it on a bases-loaded error with two outs in the eighth. The Muskies finally broke through again in the 12th, with
Alberto Oliveras (
So.-Fort Myers, Fla.) scoring on a passed ball for the go-ahead run, and then Hemmerling followed with an RBI single to center.
Pechy picked up the win, throwing 3 1/3 innings in relief and allowing only two hits with a strikeout. Chapman pitched 5 2/3 shutout innings to start, allowing six hits, and Suissa went three innings and allowed three hits and an unearned run before giving way to Pechy in the ninth.
Frisk went 3-for-5 in the first game, while Hemmerling also had three hits in the second. Regalado also added four hits on the day and scored four runs.
