Lakeland overpowers Maranatha Baptist for baseball doubleheader sweep

Jack Banks (Jr.-Mountain View, Calif.) hit safely five times, drove in five runs and was one of many Lakeland University players to have big days in non-conference baseball doubleheader sweep of Maranatha Baptist University Thursday afternoon.

The Muskies blanked the Sabercats twice, winning 8-0 and 15-0 in a pair of seven-inning games. Lakeland (7-24 overall) earned its first two non-conference wins of the season, snapping a five-game losing streak with its first two shutout wins this year.

Banks went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored in the first game and also earned the win on the mound, pitching 4 1/3 scoreless innings allowing just one hit with six strikeouts. The junior then went 2-for-2 in the second game and drove in three more runs in a rout of the Sabercats (2-20 overall).

Hunter Frisk (Fr.-Manteca, Calif.) and Chase Grasso (Fr.-McHenry, Ill.) also had key hits in the first game, with Frisk singling in two runs in the first inning and Grasso adding a two-run single in the third to push the lead to 7-0. Joey McNaught (Sr.-Albany, Wis.) also added a pinch hit RBI single in the sixth for his first hit of the season and one of his two hits on the day.

A host of players had big games in the second half of the doubleheader, as 12 different players finished with at least one hit as part of a 24-hit effort as a team. Connor Hilburn (Jr.-Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) went 4-for-5 with four runs batted in and four runs scored, Peyton Knoll (Sr.-Linden, Mich.) added three hits and Alberto Olivares (So.-Fort Myers, Fla.) added two hits, three RBIs and three runs scored.

Justin Wahl Adame (So.-Riverside, Calif.) also doubled twice, Nathan Hemmerling (Fr.-Riverside, Calif.) went 2-for-2 and scored three runs, and Collin Schutz (So.-Saint Amant, La.) added two hits and also pitched three scoreless innings with five strikeouts in getting the win. Jon Rivera (Sr.-Lowell, Ind.) and Garret Hunt (So.-Corvallis, Mont.) also came off the bench and added two hits each, with Rivera also driving in two runs.

Lakeland's home finale against Milwaukee School of Engineering will now be played tomorrow, as the games have been moved up one day in order to beat forecasted snowy and wet weather on Saturday. The Senior Day doubleheader will begin Friday at 1 p.m.
