Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Beloit comes back from two goals down to tip Lakeland in overtime

Grady Spencer scored the game-winning goal in overtime and Beloit College rallied from a two-goal deficit to sting the Lakeland University men's soccer team 3-2 Saturday afternoon at Taylor Field.

Spencer's header redirect off a long boot from near midfield ended a stretch in which the Buccaneers scored three times in the final 30 minutes, including the game-winning goal 2 minutes, 9 seconds into overtime. A match that had quickly swung in the Muskies' favor earlier slipped away late as Lakeland dropped to 2-5-1 overall on the season.

A hard-fought match throughout saw the teams play to a scoreless first half, but Lakeland appeared to be in the driver's seat less than 10 minutes into the second half after a pair of goals. The first came after defender Denver Roberts (So.-East Troy, Wis.) carried the ball down the right sideline deep into the offensive end, then sent a cross into the box that Alessandro Bianchi (Fr.-Venice, Italy) knocked in for a one-goal lead in the 51st minute.

Beloit (2-5-2 overall)  trailed 2-0 after Lakeland's second goal when Andres Gonzalez (Fr.-Jamul, Calif.) headed in a corner kick into the box by Ryoto Kinoshita (Sr.-Kanagawa, Japan) in the 55th minute that appeared to give Lakeland a comfortable lead and gave Gonzalez his first collegiate goal. The Buccaneers took a bite out of that margin in the 63rd minute when Andrew Marchesi passed through the defense ahead to Conor Waldron, who beat the goalkeeper 1-on-1 to make the score 2-1.

The guests continued to apply pressure in the second half, when they outshot Lakeland 14-4 over the second half and overtime, and it paid off in the 78th minute when defender Casey Wagner deflected in Desire Mukucha's crossing pass to tie the score. That set the stage for Wagner's long kick from near 45 yards out that Spencer deflected into the goal for a sudden end to the match.

Aaron Smith (So.-Lake Geneva, Wis.) made seven saves in goal for Lakeland. Kinoshita led the attack with three shots. Joseph Burkett (Fr.-Long Beach, Miss.) also was part of solid work in the midfield that helped the Muskies keep Beloit scoreless for more than 60 minutes.

Lakeland plays again tomorrow when it travels to face Ripon College for a 1 p.m. start in Ripon.
