APPLETON – Zach Currie scored a trio of goals to provide the difference in the match as Lawrence University defeated the Lakeland University men's soccer team 3-0 Wednesday night at Lawrence's Banta Bowl.
Currie rung up a hat trick with a pair of goals in the first half plus a third in the second half. Lawrence (1-2) earned its first win of the season, while the Muskies (1-1-1 overall) took their first loss.
Currie scored first in the 17th minute, then added a second goal at 31:01 of the match. He added his third goal in the 59th minute to give the Vikings a three-goal lead.
Lakeland was closer in play than on the scoreboard, as Lawrence finished with a 17-12 shot advantage and a 6-4 lead in corner kicks.
Bonny Figueroa (
Sr.-El Cajon, Calif.) attempted four shots, including two of the team's five on goal, and
Andres Gonzalez (
Fr.-Jamul, Calif.) added three shots.
Aaron Smith (
So.-Lake Geneva, Wis.) made six saves in goal for Lakeland. Hunter Lanton stopped five shots to earn the shutout for Lawrence.
The Muskies continue their early season road-heavy schedule this weekend when they travel to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, for the Coe College Kickoff Tournament. Lakeland will face host school Coe on Friday at 7 p.m. and then takes on Monmouth (Ill.) College on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
