CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa –
Bonny Figueroa (
Sr.-El Cajon, Calif.) scored a goal but the Lakeland University men's soccer team was defeated by Monmouth (Ill.) College 3-1 Saturday at the Coe College Kickoff Tournament.
The Muskies finished with a 0-2 record in two games of the tourney, having also lost to host Coe 4-0 Friday night. Lakeland dropped to 1-3-1 on the season, with all five of its matches away from home.
Figueroa scored his second goal of the season, coming in the 68th minute with
Alessandro Bianchi (
Fr.-Venice, Italy) on the assist. The score was the first of the half by either team and allowed the Muskies to close within 2-1.
It remained a one-goal contest until there were just over five minutes left, when the Fighting Scots added an insurance goal. Duh Thang knocked in a corner kick by Nicolas Esparon at 84:49 of the match to give Monmouth a 3-1 lead it would hold the rest of the way.
The teams were scoreless for more than 30 minutes before the Scots struck twice in short order late in the first half. Thang scored an unassisted goal at 31:53 to open the scoring, and Monmouth scored again just 2:08 later when Mario Sanchez scored an unassisted goal for a 2-0 lead.
Monmouth outshot Lakeland 14-6, including a 9-6 lead in shots on goal. Figueroa was the most frequent attacker for the Muskies with three shot attempts, while
Hunter Gorges (
So.-New London, Wis.),
Ryoto Kinoshita (
Sr.-Kanagawa, Japan) and
Zeke Tuchscherer (
Fr.-New London, Wis.) all added one shot each.
Aaron Smith (
So.-Lake Geneva, Wis.) started in goal and made two saves for the Muskies.
Alex Vanden Avond (
So.-Luxemburg, Wis.) played the second half and stopped four shots.
Lakeland is on the road again for its next match when it travels to face Ripon College Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
