Alexis Hoskins scored 19 points, Timiya Ray came near a triple-double and Dominican University looked the part of a contender in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference, trouncing the Lakeland University women's basketball team 78-50 Saturday at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
A competitive game for more than a half got away from the Muskies as Dominican went on a huge run starting in the middle of the second quarter and spanning all the way into the fourth. The Stars took the battle for position among two of four teams tied in the conference standings entering the day, and also snapped Lakeland's 11-game winning streak in the series.
The Muskies (6-9 overall, 6-4 NACC) led most of the game's first 15 minutes and were ahead 22-21 after a basket inside by
Megan Will (
Jr.-Lake Mills, Wis.) with 6 minutes, 9 seconds left in the second quarter. Dominican (11-4 overall, 7-3 NACC) would finish the half on a 12-1 run, though, taking a 33-23 lead into the break.
Lakeland still was within 38-27 after two free throws by
Rachel Hasko (
Sr.-Racine, Wis.) early in the third quarter, but the Stars would dominate the rest of the third quarter and into the fourth. A string of four straight three-pointers in a stretch of 2:37 over the third and fourth quarters helped Dominican build its largest lead at 66-33, the end of a 28-6 run in the second half and a stretch going back to the second quarter where the Stars outscored the Muskies 45-11.
Dominican became the second opponent in three days to light it up from three-point territory against Lakeland. The Stars drilled 11 of 23 from long range (47.8%), just two days after Concordia University Chicago also made 11 three-pointers against the Muskies.
Hoskins made three three-pointers and along with her 19 points added seven rebounds, three steals and three blocked shots. Ray also added 12 points, a game-high 16 rebounds and seven assists, Alisha Markley made three three-pointers in scoring 12 points off the bench, and center Nyema Burns added nine points, 10 rebounds and three blocks. Dominican finished with a 57-37 rebounding advantage.
Lakeland shot 28.3% from the field (17 of 60) and hit 3 of 16 from three-point range. Will scored 13 points and added 11 rebounds and
Morgan Zenon (
So.-Twin Lakes, Wis.) added eight points and seven rebounds.
Abby Nylund (
Jr.-Crystal Falls, Mich.) also scored seven points and
Lauren Downs (
Fr.-West Bend, Wis.) finished with three steals.
The Muskies are home again for their next game Wednesday when they welcome Wisconsin Lutheran College for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
