Series history: 98th meeting, Lakeland leads 58-39
Lakeland and Marian get together today for the 98th time in a series that dates back to 1973. This is the second meeting between the teams this season, with the Muskies winning the first in overtime 89-87 in Fond du Lac on Dec. 7, 2019. Lakeland also won both matchups last season, posting a 73-69 victory at the Woltzen Gymnasium on Dec. 8, 2018, and an 83-60 win on the road in Fond du Lac on Jan. 26, 2019. Marian's last win in the series was an 84-74 victory at home in Fond du Lac on Jan. 4, 2017. Lakeland won the first meeting ever between the schools, defeating Marian 89-48 on Dec. 18, 1973.
Lakeland last time out: Won at Concordia Wisconsin 109-87 Tuesday
Lakeland broke a five-game losing streak with a scorching-hot shooting performance, hitting 58.7% from the field. The Muskies made 44 of 75 shots in the game, including 15 of 30 from three-point range (50.0%). Lakeland shot 63.9% (23 of 36) in a first half where both teams torched the nets, taking a 63-53 lead at halftime after making 11 of 17 three-point tries. Lakeland never trailed in the second half, pulling away after the Falcons briefly closed to within early in the second half.
Carlos Campos scored 20 points to lead Lakeland,
Tony White scored 18 and
Greg Barber added a career-high 15 points off the bench.
Marian last time out: Lost to Aurora 74-69 Tuesday
The Sabres led at halftime Tuesday night, but a late run from the Spartans was too much for Marian in the five-point loss. The Sabres shot 64% from the field in the first half, including 6 of 9 from long-range, en route to a 43-40 halftime lead. Marian cooled off in the second half, however, shooting 34.6% and making just one of nine three point attempts and nine field goals total. The Spartans took advantage, going on 12-4 and 8-0 runs in the last ten minutes. Justin Wilson led Marian with 15 points, while Hunter Schultz made three of five three-pointers off the bench.
About the Sabres: Marian is in the midst of a rebuilding season as second-year coach Drake Diener's squad is in last place in the NACC with a 3-13 overall record and 2-9 conference record. The Sabres finished 7-18 overall and 5-15 last season, good for eleventh place in the NACC. Trenton Fouse has been a bright spot for the Sabres as his 49% shooting from beyond the arc is second-best in the conference.
Recapping the first meeting: The Muskies held on for the win after Marian rallied late in regulation to tie the game, coming back from being nine points down with less than two minutes to play. Logan Hamilton hit a three-pointer at the buzzer of regulation to send the game to an extra period, but Lakeland scored the first two points of overtime and never trailed, though the Sabres had a jumper to tie it at the end.Â
Jequan Pegeese scored a career-high 31 points for the Muskies to lead all scorers, and Lakeland spent a good amount of the day at the free throw line, shooting 35 free throws (making 28) to Marian's 13 foul shots.
