Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Muskies get back on winning track with win over Sabres

The Lakeland University women's basketball team held Marian University to 24.1% shooting and put the brakes on a three-game losing streak with a 73-42 win Saturday at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.

The Muskies never trailed in completing a season sweep of the Sabres and improving to 7-10 overall. Lakeland also moved to 7-5 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference.

The Muskies scored the first 11 points of the game and held Marian (3-13 overall, 3-9 NACC) scoreless for more than seven minutes before the guests scored their first points.

The Sabres did briefly put a scare into Lakeland after that, though, scoring 13 of the game's next 15 points. Three straight three-pointers by Claire Levendoski tied the game at 13-13 just over a minute into the second quarter, but that would be the closest Marian would get.

The Muskies went back to work building their lead and by halftime held a 29-19 advantage. Lakeland began to pull away late in the third quarter, finishing the period on a 9-0 run to take a 48-28 lead, and the Muskies would lead by as many as 33 points in the final minute.

Marian made 7 of 26 from three-point range, but just 14 of 58 field goals overall. The Sabres made just two two-point field goals in the first three quarters and scored just six points in the paint in the whole contest.

Lakeland also made considerable hay at the free throw line, especially in the second half. The Muskies made 29 of 38 foul shots (76.3%), including 23 of 29 in the final 20 minutes.

Janai' Farr (Jr.-Racine, Wis.) scored a game-high 13 points, including hitting 10 of 11 from the charity stripe, and led a 44-13 advantage in bench points for Lakeland. Megan Will (Jr.-Lake Mills, Wis.) scored 12 points and blocked five shots and freshman Ellie Felsinger (Cedar Grove, Wis.) scored a career-high 10 points, making all three of her field goals plus 4 of 5 from the line.

Lauren Downs (Fr.-West Bend, Wis.) also added nine points, including a pair of three-pointers in the first half, plus four assists. Rachel Hasko (Sr.-Racine, Wis.) added eight points and Kacey Gardner (So.-Evergreen Park, Ill.) chipped in six points, five assists and six steals. The Muskies shot 38.5% from the field (20 of 52).

Levendoski scored 12 points and made four three-pointers to lead Marian, which outrebounded Lakeland 46-37 but committed 27 turnovers.

Lakeland is on the road next time out when it travels to Milwaukee to face Alverno College at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
