Lakeland sets school three-point record in rout of Rockford

ROCKFORD, Ill. – The Lakeland University women's basketball team set a new school single-game record, draining 19 three-pointers in a 78-42 victory over Rockford University Wednesday night in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference game.

The Muskies made 19 of 46 from behind the three-point line, easily besting Lakeland's previous single-game record of 16 triples set Jan. 25, 2014 also against Rockford. The 19 threes also are tied for the second-most by an NCAA Division III team all season, behind only the 20 by Augsburg (Minn.) University on Nov. 14, 2019 against Northwestern (Minn.).

Lakeland (5-7 overall, 5-2 NACC) entered the game shooting 23.5% from three-point range, 375th of 431 Division III schools. The Muskies kept firing away against the Regents' zone defense, though, taking more than two-thirds of their shots from behind the arc, and kept knocking them down, more than doubling their previous season high of nine threes made against Illinois Tech on Dec. 14.

Freshman Lauren Downs (West Bend, Wis.) made 5 of 6 three-point tries for a career-high 15 points, as well as adding a career-best four steals. Abby Nylund (Jr.-Crystal Falls, Mich.) hit 5 of 8 from three in scoring 15 points, Janai' Farr (Jr.-Racine, Wis.) made four threes for 12 points and Amanda Majewski (Sr.-Peshtigo, Wis.) added three triples on her way to 11 points.

The Muskies trailed 12-9 more than halfway through the first quarter before heating up, scoring the final 13 points of the quarter for a 22-12 lead. Lakeland hit four three-pointers in the first quarter and five more in the second in building a 43-22 lead at the break. The Muskies added four more threes in the third quarter plus six more in the fourth.

Lakeland shot 41.2% from the field, making 28 of 68 shots. The Muskies also had 25 assists on 28 field goals made, and on the defensive end held Rockford to 30.2% shooting as the Regents made 13 of 43 field goals. Jazsmin Blue finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Regents (2-10 overall, 0-7 NACC).

The Muskies are on the road again Wednesday when they travel to face Rockford University at 7 p.m.
