Miller leads buffet of career highs as Lakeland tops North Park in four sets

CHICAGO – Nate Vanderwaal (Sr.-Rockford, Ill.) piled up another 20-kill match and Ben Miller (Jr.-Middleton, Wis.) set new career highs for kills and digs as Lakeland University defeated North Park (Ill.) University in four sets Friday night in a non-conference match.

The Muskies won the first two sets and eventually prevailed 25-18, 25-17, 23-25, 25-22 in the first-ever men's volleyball meeting between the schools. Lakeland improved to 4-10 on the season while North Park dropped to 2-4.

The Muskies received huge matches from Vanderwaal and Miller, who both posted double-doubles. Vanderwaal finished with 20 kills on a .378 hitting percentage, hitting at least 20 kills for the third time in six matches. The senior also added 10 digs.

Miller added a career-high 13 kills as he also has stepped up as a hitter of late with double-digit kill sin three of Lakeland's last four matches. The junior also added a new career best with 15 digs.

The two weren't the only setting personal bests Friday, as career highs were abundant. Cameron Ekum (Jr.-Wales, Wis.) also posted 41 assists and 15 digs and set a new career best with six service aces, part of the Muskies 12 aces as a team. Libero Maui Viola (Jr.-Gurnee, Ill.) also set a new career high from the back row with 13 digs, making for four Lakeland players with at least 10 digs.

Matt Misheck (Jr.-Oak Forest, Ill.) also added eight kills and Jesse Peters (Fr.-Lake Mary, Fla.) finished with three blocks assisted and two service aces.

Noah Salazar led North Park with 14 kills and Armando Quinones added 13 kills. Frank Mauigoa also notched a match-high 18 digs.

Lakeland is right back on the court in the Chicago area again Saturday when it faces Aurora University at 1 p.m. in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference match.
