ROCKFORD, Ill. – The Lakeland University men's basketball team clinched a spot in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Tournament and gained the inside track on a home game to begin the tourney after a 102-89 win at Rockford University Tuesday night.
Lakeland became the fourth team to wrap up a berth in the six-team NACC tourney, and now controls its own destiny in pursuit of hosting a first round game next Tuesday. The Muskies will be the No. 4 seed in the tournament with a win at Dominican University Saturday, and could claim the fourth seed even with a loss depending on other conference results.
Lakeland (12-12 overall, 10-9 NACC) finished with a split of the season series with Rockford by shooting 53.3% for the game, making 32 of 60 shots. The Muskies shot better than 50% in both halves and never trailed after the game's first five minutes.
Lakeland built a 10-point lead midway through the opening half before Rockford (11-13 overall, 9-10 NACC) came back to tie the game at 32-32 with 5 minutes, 39 seconds left in the half. The Muskies closed the half on a 17-7 run, though, with two free throws by
Carlos Campos (
Sr.-Janesville, Wis.) making it 49-39 at the break.
Lakeland also scored the first six points of the second half and was in control the rest of the way. The Muskies led by as many as 26 points and topped the 100-point mark for the third time this season.
Trenton Nickel (
Jr.-Kiel, Wis.) scored 24 points and added seven rebounds and
Isaac Anderson (
Sr.-Linden, Wis.) also topped the 20-point mark with 23 points plus 13 rebounds. Campos also added 19 points,
Zach Hasenstein (
Jr.-Sheboygan, Wis.) scored 13 points off the bench and
Jequan Pegeese (
Jr.-Beloit, Wis.) added 12 points plus seven assists.
Vincent Eugene scored 18 points to lead Rockford, which shot 46.8% (37 of 79). The Regents have lost two straight and five of their last seven and dropped into a three-way tie for fifth in the NACC heading into their regular season finale Saturday.
