Concordia University Wisconsin caught fire from three-point range in the fourth quarter and Lakeland University saw a late lead slip away in a 66-58 loss Saturday at home in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference game.
The Muskies had late-game struggles again as Concordia rallied from seven points down in the final eight minutes with a dazzling long-range shooting performance late. The Falcons also turned the tables from a loss to Lakeland in similar fashion earlier in the season and gained a split of the two teams' season series.
Concordia (13-8 overall, 12-4 NACC) made seven three-pointers in the final quarter, hitting 7 of 11 from three-point range in the final period. The Falcons outscored the Muskies (9-13 overall, 9-8 NACC) 25-14 in the final ten minutes, rallying after trailing much of the second half.
Lakeland made its first three shots of the fourth quarter, and a layup by
Hayley Walding (
So.-Bradenton, Fla.) gave the Muskies a 48-41 lead with 9 minutes, 19 seconds left in the game. Walding then answered a CUW three-pointer with her own triple making, and another Falcon triple was answered by
Kylie Birkholz (
Sr.-Kenosha, Wis.) hitting a free throw and then a jumper to make it 54-47 with 7:40 left.
Concordia continued to rain in shots from deep, though. An 11-0 run including two triples by Clara Chambers and another by Kaitlyn Foster, the last giving the Falcons a 58-54 lead with 5:37 left. Lakeland got back within two at 58-56 after a layup by
Ellie Felsinger (
Fr.-Cedar Grove, Wis.), but the Muskies would commit turnovers on their next two possession, miss a chance to tie on a third, and CUW would follow with consecutive three-pointers. The final blow came with Hannah Boettcher hitting the Falcons' seventh triple of the quarter for a 64-56 lead with 1:44 to play.
Concordia's shooting display came almost out of nowhere after it shot just 31.9% (15 of 47) over the first three quarters. The Falcons were 3-for-16 from behind the arc through three quarters, but became the fourth team to hit at least ten three-pointers in a game against the Muskies this season.
Lakeland took an early 14-9 lead after one quarter after CUW made 3 of 20 shots in the first quarter. The Muskies continued to lead into halftime, taking a 27-25 lead into the break, and fought off an early second half charge by the guests to regain a five-point lead late in the third quarter.
Lakeland received a major boost from its bench, with 37 of its 58 points coming from reserves. Felsinger scored a career-high 13 points and Walding added 11 points including 3-for-3 accuracy from three-point range.
Megan Will (
Jr.-Lake Mills, Wis.) also added 12 points, and as a team the Muskies shot 32.8% (20 of 61).
Foster finished with 20 points for Concordia and Chambers added 19, including five three-pointers. The Falcons finished shooting 39.3% (24 of 61), and their win came after the Muskies had rallied from a 14-point deficit and scored the game's final 19 points in their first meeting in December for a 62-54 win.
The Muskies are on the road for their next game Tuesday when they travel to face Aurora University at 7 p.m.
