Schutz throws complete game but Lakeland drops pitching duel with Baruch

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Collin Schutz (Jr.-Saint Amant, La.) threw a complete game but the Lakeland University baseball team dropped a 3-1 decision to Baruch College (N.Y.) Monday morning at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic.

Schutz did not allow an earned run but errors came back to bite the Muskies, who dropped to 1-3 overall on the season and on their spring break trip. Baruch concluded its spring trip with a win and improved to 6-3 overall.

Baruch secured an early lead after a hit was followed by consecutive errors in the bottom of the first. The score remained at 1-0 in favor of the Bearcats until the bottom of the third when Baruch started with a hit but three errors resulted in two runs to push the lead to 3-0.

Strong pitching from Schutz and Baruch's Paul Sirakowski kept both teams from scoring until the ninth inning when Brian Biggs (So.-Romeoville, Ill.) scored on a Trevor Meier (Sr.-Columbus, Mont.) single to cut the Bearcats' lead to 3-1. Hunter Frisk (So.-Manteca, Calif.) followed with a single to put the tying run on base, but Dylan Penny followed with a fly out to left to close the game.

Both starting pitchers threw complete games and allowed just one earned run combined. In his first start of the season, Schutz allowed just four hits and three unearned runs in eight innings of work. Sirakowski earned his third win of the season and allowed one run on five hits with seven strikeouts and two walks.

Frisk finished 2-for-4 on the day with two singles, while Tyler LaMack (Fr.-Pewaukee, Wis.) added a double and Hunter Garling (Jr.-Perkins, Mich.) stole a base and tallied one walk in his three plate appearances.

The Muskies have Tuesday off before they play a doubleheader with Plymouth State (N.H.) University. Game one starts at 9 a.m. local time in Fort Myers, Fla., 8 a.m. Central time.
