Seniors help Muskies to two more wins to finish abbreviated softball season

CLERMONT, Fla. – Lexi Upson (Sr.-Waterford, Mich.) finished with four hits on the day and fellow senior Morgan Schiedemeyer (Menomonee Falls, Wis.) drove in four runs as the Lakeland University softball team closed its abbreviated spring season with two wins Friday at the PFX Spring Games.

The Muskies whitewashed North Central (Minn.) University 9-0 in five innings in their first game and later on rallied to top Washington (Md.) College 4-3. Lakeland finished its spring break trip with a 5-5 record, and found out after its final game Friday that its season was over, after the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference announced the cancellation of all athletics competitions for the rest of the season in response to the COVID-19 virus.

Upson led four players with two hits each in the opening game against North Central (0-6) and also drove in a pair of runs. Her RBI single to score Cheyenne Mathas (So.-St. John, Ind.) with the first run of the game propelled a five-run first inning as the Muskies scored all nine of their runs over the first three innings.

Upson and Schiedemeyer both added run-scoring doubles as Lakeland finished with 12 hits against the Rams. Schiedemeyer, Mathas and Caitlin Fitzgerald (Sr.-Chicago, Ill.) all added two hits each.

Leah Binsfeld (Jr.-Kaukauna, Wis.) pitched four shutout innings to get the win, allowing two hits with four strikeouts. Ariana Brown (Fr.-Beloit, Wis.) came on in relief for the fifth and pitched a hitless fifth inning with a strikeout.

The Muskies had an uphill climb for much of the second game, falling behind 2-0 in the first inning and trailing until the sixth. That's when both Upson and Maddie Blankenship (So.-West Bend, Wis.) singled and Schiedemeyer followed with a three-run home run, her first homer of the season and third of her career.

Lakeland added another run in the seventh as Hannah Hornsby (So.-Brookville, Ind.) doubled, Brown came on to pinch run for her and later scored on an error. The insurance run would come in handy in the seventh, when the Shorewomen scored a run with two outs to close within 4-3 before Lindsay Cudecki (Sr.-Chicago, Ill.) induced a fielder's choice to end the game.

Cudecki hurled a complete game for the second straight day and earned the win allowing 13 hits and two runs (two earned) with two strikeouts. Sydney Wickman (Jr.-Quinnesec, Mich.) batted 3-for-3 to lead the Muskies' hitting attack and Upson added two hits as Lakeland won despite being outhit 13-9.

The games marked the final ones for six Lakeland seniors, including Cudecki, Fitzgerald, Schiedemeyer, Upson, Mackenzie Gray (Fernandina Beach, Fla.) and Madi Olson (Eau Claire, Wis.).
