Concordia Chicago stays hot, sweeps Lakeland for its seventh straight win

Luke Vozenilek finished with 20 kills and Concordia University Chicago continued showing major improvement in the second year of its program with a three-set sweep of the Lakeland University men's volleyball team Saturday afternoon at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.

The Cougars came on strong late in all three sets for a 25-16, 25-18, 25-18 victory, their first-ever over the Muskies. Concordia won its seventh straight match and improved to 14-3 overall and 3-1 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference, one year after finishing 4-22 overall and winless in the NACC in its debut season.

Vozenilek was the dominant offensive performer in the match, notching 20 of Concordia's 33 kills and nearly outhitting Lakeland by himself. The freshman hit .227 for the match, helping the Cougars hit .256 as a team with 33 kills and 12 errors in 82 attacks.

Lakeland (5-14 overall, 1-4 NACC) actually led 15-14 past the midway point of the first set before Concordia closed the set on an 11-1 run. The Cougars also finished the second set outscoring the Muskies 9-5, and the third set also was tied at 15-15 before CUC finished on a 10-3 roll to in it.

The Muskies totaled 26 kills as a team but hit just .058 with 20 errors in 103 swings. Lakeland also committed 14 service errors, eight more than Concordia.

Cameron Ekum (Jr.-Wales, Wis.) and Nate Vanderwaal (Sr.-Rockford, Ill.) led the Muskies with eight kills each, including Ekum hitting .462 from his setter position and also added 15 assists. Vanderwaal was limited to eight kills with seven errors in 38 attacks, but tied Jesse Peters (Fr.-Lake Mary, Fla.) for team honors with two service aces each. Maui Viola (Jr.-Gurnee, Ill.) also added a team-high nine digs.

Lakeland is home again Wednesday when it welcomes Marian University for another conference match. The starting time at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium has been changed and is now moved up to a 4 p.m. start from its original set time of 7 p.m.
