PLYMOUTH, Wis. –
Isabella Westerholm (
Fr.-Prior Lake, Minn.) set a collegiate career high with 12 kills and the Lakeland University women's volleyball team made quick work of Alverno College with a three-set win Tuesday night at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
The Muskies weathered a challenge in the first set to roll to a 25-19, 25-11, 25-10 win in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference match. Lakeland snapped a four-match losing streak and won for the third time in conference play, improving to 3-7 in the NACC (4-16 overall).
Westerholm finished with 12 kills without an error in 18 attacks for a .667 hitting percentage. From her middle position she regularly feasted on big holes in the middle of the court and led an efficient Muskies attack which finished with 38 kills and just eight errors in 98 swings. The.306 hitting percentage was the team's second-best mark of the season, behind only a .337 mark in a win over Lake Forest (Ill.) College Sept. 11.
Lakeland trailed only briefly early in the first and third sets and never in the second set against an Alverno team with just six healthy players. The Muskies' most nervous moment may have come late in the first set, when the Inferno (1-13 overall, 0-10 NACC) cut a 17-9 deficit down to three points late in the set, the last time at 21-18. Lakeland closed scoring four of the final five points, including kills by Westerholm,
Kelly Swope (
So.-Heyworth, Ill.) and
Susana Stevens (
Fr.-Las Cruces, N.M.).
The Muskies led 11-7 in the second set before scoring six straight points, including a trio of service aces by
Roseily Carrasquillo (
Fr.-Yabucoa, Puerto Rico). Lakeland finished the set outscoring Alverno 14-4 the rest of the way, and then closed the match with the final six points in the third set, with
Emily Bringer (
Sr.-Round Lake, Ill.) finishing the match with a kill.
Stevens added seven kills in two sets and
Hailey DeGrave (
So.-Sturgeon Bay, Wis.) added six kills. Carrasquillo led the Muskies with 22 kills and added eight digs.
Sydney Pingitore (
Sr.-Kenosha, Wis.) led Lakeland with nine digs in two sets and
Kimmy McKay (
Sr.-Bolingbrook, Ill.) added eight digs plus three aces.
Maeve Sullivan (
So.-Chicago, Ill.) also chipped in eight digs.
Rolin West led Alverno with nine kills, including seven in the first set before the Muskies slowed her down in the final two sets. Alex McMath finished with 17 digs and 12 assists and Jenna Flayter added five kills and seven digs. The Inferno hit .022 with 19 kills and 17 errors and could rarely make a run as Lakeland finished with a 78% sideout percentage, including 86% over the final two sets.
The Muskies next will make the short drive west on Highway 23 to face Marian University in Fond du Lac on Friday at 7 p.m.
