Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Muskies continue late-season charge with comeback win over Sabres

PLYMOUTH, Wis. – Michecadet Gethand (So.-Jackson, Wis.) scored two more goals and the Lakeland University men's soccer team continued a late-season push with its third straight win, rallying to defeat Marian University 3-1 Wednesday night at Taylor Field.

The Muskies extended their unbeaten streak to four matches, their longest stretch without a loss in 11 years, and also continued their midweek success, winning on Wednesday for the fourth week in a row. Lakeland also won its fourth Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference match, clinched its most wins in conference play since 2011, and stayed in the picture with two matches to play still with a chance to qualify for the six-team NACC Tournament.

The Muskies (5-6-2 overall, 4-5-1 NACC) shook off being without several starters, the game's start being delayed by 45 minutes due to lightning and an early Marian goal to improve to 3-0-1 in their last four games.

The Sabres (5-11 overall, 2-9 NACC) got on the board less than 11 minutes into the match after a Lakeland turnover in its defensive end left Drew Cowden in the box on the left side threatening. Cowden centered a pass to Brad Leach who tapped it back to Giuliano Corazzina, whose shot from 15 yards out scored inside the right post for an early 1-0 lead.

The Muskies trailed into the 28th minute when Lizandro Jimenez (Sr.-Milwaukee, Wis.) struck a corner kick from the right corner. Gethand was able to rise up above the bunch in the box to head the ball into the goal for his seventh goal of the season to tie the score at 1-1.

The teams went to halftime tied, but Lakeland took the lead 12 minutes, 29 seconds into the second half. A failed Marian clear after a cross into the box went to Andres Gonzalez (So.-Jamul, Calif.), who took a swing at the ball and skimmed it to Gethand, who struck it in the air with the inside of his foot and inside the left post for the go-ahead goal.

Lakeland purchased some insurance in the 78th minute shortly after Ben Taylor (Fr.-Sheboygan, Wis.) won a Sabres goal kick in the air, heading it back into the Muskies offensive end. Jimenez carried the ball into the end before briefly having it taken away, then recovering and driving deep into the box at the left post before beating goalkeeper Aden Jerome from eight yards out for his second goal of the season.

Lakeland was outshot 14-10 for the match but shut down the Sabres in the second half, including their potent forward attack of Corazzina and Cowden, who rank among the NACC leaders in goals and assists, respectively. Zach Heiman (So.-Racine, Wis.) made eight saves in the match, including four early in the second half, and the Muskies took over late as Marian did not attempt a shot in the final 23 minutes.

Lakeland plays at home one final time this season when it welcomes Illinois Institute of Technology Saturday for Senior Day at 2 p.m. at Taylor Field.
