Wisconsin Lutheran blitzes Lakeland behind four Carreno goals

PLYMOUTH, Wis. – Miriam Carreno scored four goals for Wisconsin Lutheran College and the Lakeland University women's soccer team had a rough night on the pitch in an 8-0 loss Wednesday at Taylor Field.

Carreno scored the first three goals of the game, all in the first 28 minutes to put the Muskies in an early hole. Lakeland never recovered and dropped to 1-10 overall and 1-6 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference match.

Carreno used her speed to beat the Muskies to through balls for three of her goals, including the first one 5 minutes, 38 seconds into the match. She also deposited a rebound off the hands of goalkeeper Haley Rich (Jr.-West Chicago, Ill.) in the 28th minute for her third goal, and Carreno's final goal came in the 57th minute on another long pass from beyond midfield by Xiomara Garcia that she chased down and put in from ten yards out.

Wisconsin Lutheran (3-9 overall, 2-5 NACC) also added a goal by Signe Kind in the first half off a rebound after Gwynn Manteufel (Fr.-Kewaskum, Wis.) cleared a shot attempt off the goal line but not out, allowing Kind to effectively crash the crease for a goal and a 4-0 lead. The Warriors then added four goals in less than 12 minutes after halftime, including long shots by Ella Miller and Katie Wasiak plus a chip from near midfield by Garcia that bounced high over Rich coming out from the goal and settled into the net before the Muskies defense could recover.

WLC finished with a 22-3 advantage in shot attempts. The Muskies' best chance came just over seven minutes into the match trailing 1-0, when Manteufel made a long run into the offensive end on the left side and hit a crossing pass on the ground that got through to Hanna Brouch (Fr.-Kaukauna, Wis.), who had a good look at the goal. Her shot from 10 yards out appeared ticketed for the net, but scrambling Warriors goalkeeper Sierra Kannas dove back across her body to get her hands on the ball, and though it skidded away Lakeland was unable to get to the rebound before the Lutheran defense cleared.

Rich made eight saves in goal for the Muskies in the first 55 minutes before Erin Tomlinson (Sr.-Madison, Wis.) came on and made one save. Brouch, Marlen Reyes (So.-Milwaukee, Wis.) and Faith Turley (So.-Lincoln, Ill.) accounted for Lakeland's three shot attempts.

Miller and Garcia both added two assists in addition to their goals for Wisconsin Lutheran. Wasiak also finished with a goal and an assist.

Lakeland will get another chance at home Saturday when it hosts Rockford University at 11 a.m. at Taylor Field as part of a women's/men's doubleheader that also will include the Muskies and Regents men's teams playing at 1:30 p.m.
