Lakeland, Rockford men’s soccer sides battle to a hard-fought tie

PLYMOUTH, Wis. – Carson Galla (So.-Deerfield, Wis.) scored his first collegiate goal as the Lakeland University men's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw with Rockford University Saturday afternoon at Taylor Field.

The Muskies tied for the second time this season and the first time in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play after a hard-fought contest in which the only two goals were scored just 19 seconds apart. Lakeland is now 3-6-2 overall and 2-5-1 in conference, while the Regents are now 5-6-1 overall and 3-3-1 in the NACC.

The teams were scoreless for more than 63 minutes despite plenty of wide-open, back-and-forth stretches of play until Rockford scored the first goal. A quick transition saw Miguel Gallardo on the run towards the Muskies goal, and he shook a sliding defender and then blasted a shot past goalkeeper Zach Heiman (So.-Racine, Wis.) at 63 minutes, 28 seconds of the match.

Lakeland answered in a jiffy, just seconds after the ensuing kickoff. Heiman sent a long ball down the middle of the field towards Michecadet Gethand (So.-Jackson, Wis.), inducing Rockford goalkeeper Jonathan Eduardo Rosales out of the goal. The ball ricocheted off both players before Suleiman Haji (So.-Mankato, Minn.) took it from Rosales and then fired a shot that was deflected by a Regents defender, but Galla followed with a flying kick, getting to the ball just before Morales and putting it into the goal for the equalizer.

The score would remain that way the rest of the game. Lakeland's best chances the rest of the way included Haji getting a shot after a corner kick late in regulation and a free kick by Joseph Reyes (So.-Pico River, Calif.) near the end of the first overtime. Rockford would make a big push in the second overtime, outshooting the Muskies 7-0 and forcing Heiman to make three saves, but the Lakeland defense held on for the tie.

Reyes finished with four shots and Michael Barragan (So.-Milwaukee, Wis.) added three shots for Lakeland. Heiman made five saves in goal in playing all 110 minutes.

Javier Palacios fired five shots and Gallardo added four shots for Rockford, which outshot Lakeland 17-12 for the match. Rosales made three saves in goal.

The Muskies are home again for their next contest Wednesday against Edgewood College at 7 p.m. at Taylor Field.
