Muskies blow past Lions with ease in home opener

PLYMOUTH, Wis. – The Lakeland University men's basketball team continued to enjoy success against Finlandia (Mich.) University, defeating the Lions in decisive fashion for the third time this year with a 119-71 victory Wednesday night at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.

The Muskies won their season home opener and defeated the Lions for the 13th straight time in the series and the third time in the year 2021. Lakeland also topped the 100-point mark against Finlandia for the third time this year, including twice this spring in the abbreviated 2020-21 season.

The Muskies (2-1 overall) set a school single-game record with 23 made three-pointers, including 14 in the second half. The Lions provided little resistance on the perimeter and Lakeland took full advantage, shooting 51 triples and making 45.1% of them.

Lakeland never trailed in the game and opened the contest on a 20-3 run over the first 7 minutes, 16 seconds. The Muskies pushed the lead to 20 just past the halfway mark of the first half and led 53-29 at halftime.

The point total and lead continued to grow in the second half and Lakeland reached the 80-point mark with 12:11 left in the game. The Muskies hit 100 when Kai Buliox (So.-Milwaukee, Wis.) scored while fouled with 4:48 left to make it 100-68.

Lakeland shot 50.6% for the game, making 43 of 85 shots from the field. Cam Jaeger (So.-Oostburg, Wis.) scored 22 points, Earl Lewis (Jr.-Madison, Wis.) scored 19 and Tylan Huff (So.-Milwaukee, Wis.) and Eric Jordan (So.-Chicago, Ill.) added 13 and 11 points, respectively. Matt Sechman (Sr.-Chicago, Ill.) led the team with ten rebounds as the Muskies outrebounded the Lions 55-45.

Finlandia (0-3 overall) was led by Rae'quan Funches with 13 points and Danny Zuchak added 11 points, seven rebounds and four steals. The Lions shot 35.0%, making 28 of 80 shots.

Lakeland goes back on the road Friday when it travels to face North Central (Minn.) University in Minneapolis for a 4 p.m. start.
