Numerous records fall as Lakeland finishes 2021 campaign with win at Rockford

ROCKFORD, Ill. – One of the most potent offenses in Lakeland University football history went out with a bang, setting or tying a host of records in the Muskies' 56-28 season-ending victory over Rockford University Saturday afternoon at Sam Greeley Field.

Larry Rivers (Sr.-Dearborn Heights, Mich.), Brice Kensey (Sr.-New Orleans, La.) and Peyton Domangue (So.-Thibodaux, La.) combined to set or tie six school or Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference records as the Muskies finished their season strong and sent out 18 seniors with a victory. Lakeland also closed with an 8-2 overall record (6-2 NACC), its best winning percentage in a full season since 2003.

In a season chock full of big offensive performances, the Muskies put up huge numbers across the board in their finale. Lakeland rolled up 671 yards of total offense against the Regents (2-8 overall, 1-7 NACC), including 359 yards passing and 312 yards rushing. The Muskies gained more than 600 yards for the second time this season, topped 50 points for the fourth time and finished the year among the school's all-time squads in yardage and scoring.

Rivers closed out one of the most distinguished careers by a Muskies running back with another outstanding game. He rushed 24 times for 233 yards and two touchdowns and with those numbers set a trio of Lakeland single-season records. He finished the season with 1,521 rushing yards, breaking his previous school record of 1,375 yards set two years ago, and also eclipsed a pair of long-standing records held by former NFL veteran Pat Curran. Rivers finished with 22 touchdowns and 132 points scored on the season, breaking Curran's mark of 21 touchdowns scored in 1967 and 1968 and his season scoring record of 128 points in 1967.

Kensey closed out one of the greatest seasons by a Lakeland wide receiver, one that there's little doubt would've been the greatest if he had played a full season. The senior caught 12 passes for 204 yards and four touchdowns on Saturday, tying a school and NACC single-game record for touchdown receptions in a game. He tied Dezmon Eddie's Lakeland receiving TDs record set Sept. 29, 2018 against Concordia University Chicago, a single-game mark also shared with three other players in the NACC.

Kensey's 202 receiving yards also are the second-most in a game ever by a Muskie, behind only Roberto Flores with 231 receiving yards against Benedictine University Oct. 24, 2009. Kensey finished the season with 75 receptions for 1,035 yards and 12 touchdowns, the third-most receptions and receiving yards for a Lakeland receiver in a season. He is just the third Muskie to top 1,000 yards receiving in a season, and he did it in just seven games after missing the first three games due to injury.

Domangue also set a new school single-season record for successful point-after-touchdown kicks, making all eight of his tries Saturday to finish with 53 made PATs this season. He broke Peter Cebulka's 25-year old mark of 47 set in 1996 and concluded one of the best seasons ever by a Muskies kicker, making 53 of 59 extra point tries plus both of his field goal attempts.

The three contributed to a juggernaut on Saturday as the Muskies scored touchdowns on eight of their 12 offensive drives, with another drive ending at the Rockford 2 as time expired. Lakeland scored on five of its first six drives and built a 28-0 lead by midway through the second quarter on the way to a 35-7 halftime lead.

Rivers tied and surpassed Curran's records quickly, scoring first on a 24-yard run midway through the second quarter to put Lakeland up 14-0 and then again on a five-yard dash in the second quarter to make it 28-0. He gained 181 yards in the first half alone, including runs of 46 and 40 yards.

Kensey's big day started early with a 30-yard touchdown reception from Charl'Tez Nunnery (Sr.-Liberty, Miss.)  just 1 minute, 51 seconds into the game to cap a five-play, 65-yard drive and give the Muskies an early lead. His second came late in the second quarter when Nunnery found him deep for a 77-yard touchdown, quickly answering the Regents' first touchdown and putting Lakeland ahead 35-7.

Kensey caught two more touchdown passes in the fourth quarter, both times answering Rockford scores. Nunnery hit Kensey for a 34-yard touchdown with 10:18 left in the game to make it 49-21 and then found him for a five-yard touchdown with 4:33 left for the game's final score.

Nunnery also closed his Lakeland career completing 19 of 32 passes for 351 yards and four touchdowns. He also added nine carries for 44 yards and two touchdowns, and his 29 touchdown passes and 3,230 yards of total offense this year are both fourth all-time on the Muskies' list in those respective categories.

Mason Prunick (Sr.-Sheboygan, Wis.) also caught three passes for 89 yards and Damarious Brown (Memphis, Tenn.) added two receptions for 33 yards. Lakeland finished the season with 451 points scored, an average of 45.1 points per game and 5,204 yards of total offense. The latter two totals are both the second-most in a season in school history.

Lakeland finished the game with 30 first downs, which was actually two less than Rockford's 32 first downs. The Regents also finished with 431 yards of offense but needed 89 plays to the Muskies' 70 plays and average of 9.6 yards per play, double Rockford's 4.8 per play.

The Regents moved the ball and held it for nearly 36 minutes (35:59), but four drives ended on downs, including two in the first quarter inside the Muskies' 30-yard line. A third in the opening frame was halted deep in Lakeland territory when Rayshion Brumfield (Sr.-Ponchatoula, La.) registered his team-best fifth interception of the season.

Lakeland was able to largely keep in check Rockford's explosive combination of quarterback Jaelen Ray and receiver Joey Owens. Ray completed 26 of 53 passes for 249 yards and three touchdowns, but Owens caught just six passes for 47 yards, well below numbers coming in that ranked among the NCAA Division III leaders.

LaVar Johnson rushed for 125 yards and a first-half touchdown for the Regents, but all three of Ray's touchdown passes came in the second half, when the best Rockford could do was trade touchdowns over the final 30 minutes.

Shazon Crutcher (Sr.-Lansing, Mich.) finished with 13 tackles in his final game for Lakeland and Justin McMahon (Fr.-Kyle, Texas) added nine tackles. Ezekiel Combs (Sr.-East Point, Ga.) and Isaac Aanya (Jr.-San Antonio, Texas) both added eight tackles each.
