Lakeland cruises past Alverno for first back-to-back wins of season

PLYMOUTH, Wis. – Ellie Felsinger (Jr.-Cedar Grove, Wis.) scored a career-high 14 points and added seven rebounds and the Lakeland University women's basketball team climbed over the .500 mark for the first time this season with a 61-34 win over Alverno College Tuesday night at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.

The Muskies never trailed in an easy victory where they held Alverno to just 16 points through three quarters. After alternating wins and losses through its first eight contests, Lakeland won consecutive games for the first time this season and improved to 5-4 overall and 2-1 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference.

Felsinger scored ten of her points in the first half when the Muskies built a 27-10 halftime lead on the strength of outscoring Alverno 14-2 in the second quarter. The Inferno had kept the game close in the first quarter, trailing 13-8 after ten minutes as both teams got off to cold shooting starts before Alverno's struggles got worse in the second period with just one make in 12 field goal attempts.

Lakeland then opened the second half scoring seven points in the first 1 minute, 40 seconds to extend the lead to 34-10, and Alverno (1-6 overall, 0-3 NACC) never got closer than 22 points again. The Muskies led 44-16 after three quarters and went deep into the bench with seven minutes left in the game with a number of players getting involved on the bench. Sixteen different players played for Lakeland and 12 players scored, including Kensey McKee (So.-Rochester, Ind.) scoring four points and senior Chassity Bradford (Lincoln Park, Mich.) hitting a three-pointer for her first collegiate points.

Alexa Yost (So.-Menasha, Wis.) also scored 13 points to tie her season and career high and added four steals and Lauren Downs (Jr.-West Bend, Wis.) finished with six points and six rebounds off the bench. Brianna Jones (Jr.-Indianapolis, Ind.) also grabbed ten rebounds.

The Muskies shot 33.3% (24 of 72) but outrebounded Alverno 52-41, including 17 offensive rebounds. The Inferno shot 27.1%, making 16 of 59 shots, and also committed 20 turnovers. Lauryn Hilliard scored 14 points off the bench for the guests and Angie Reutgen finished with a career-high eight assists.

Lakeland is home again on Saturday when it welcomes Aurora University for a 2 p.m. tip-off at the Woltzen Gymnasium that opens a doubleheader that also will include the Muskies and Spartans men's teams playing at 4:15 p.m.
