Megan Will (
Sr.-Lake Mills, Wis.) became the 14th player in Lakeland University women's basketball history to score 1,000 points, but Wisconsin Lutheran College spoiled a historic night in sending the Muskies to a 70-50 loss Saturday night at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
The Warriors completed a sweep of the teams' two-day series, winning their sixth straight game to open the season and remaining atop the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference North Division with a 6-0 division mark. Lakeland dropped to 2-3 overall and 1-3 in the NACC North, falling to WLC by a similar score to the teams' 68-46 result Friday.
Just as she was the day before, Will was the focus of the Warriors' defensive efforts, regularly covered with two defenders when she caught the ball in the post. She was held to four points in the game but found a way to get the elusive 1,000th point late into the second quarter, when she caught a pass from
Morgan Zenon (
Jr.-Twin Lakes, Wis.) inside, spun to her right, and banked a hook shot off the glass to reach the milestone with 3:52 remaining in the first half. She is the first Lakeland player to reach 1,000 points since Miranda Jacobson (2015-19) reached the mark just over two years earlier Feb. 11, 2019.
The Muskies' night got off to a rocky start, though, a seeming continuation of Friday night's game. Wisconsin Lutheran outscored Lakeland 37-13 in the second half Friday, and on Saturday the Warriors dominated the first quarter, taking a 23-5 lead after one period.
The Muskies played catch-up the rest of the way but settled down and outscored WLC 33-25 over the second and third quarters. After trailing 39-21 at halftime, Lakeland outscored the Warriors 17-9 in the third, with
Kacey Gardner (
Jr.-Evergreen Park, Ill.) and
Hayley Walding (
Jr.-Bradenton, Fla.) combining for 11 points. The Muskies  even cut the deficit down to eight points with a free throw by
Ellie Felsinger (
So.-Cedar Grove, Wis.) making it 46-38 late in the period.
The Muskies were within striking distance going into the fourth quarter trailing 48-38, but WLC made two three-pointers early in the final period and led by double-digits the rest of the way. The Warriors would hit four triples in all in the fourth, outscoring Lakeland 22-12 over the final 10 minutes.
The guests' height created challenges for the Muskies as Wisconsin Lutheran out-rebounded Lakeland 47-29. WLC center Amanda Brug also scored a game-best and tied her career high with 23 points, making 11 of 15 shots from the field, and added nine rebounds. Sam Leisemann also added 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Gardner led Lakeland with 11 points total and added four rebounds and three steals in the loss. Walding also came off the bench to score 10 points and Will added a team-high nine rebounds. The Muskies shot 38.0% as a team, making 19 of 50 shots, and also committed 20 turnovers, five more than WLC.
Jenna Mace also scored 22 points for Wisconsin Lutheran, including five three-pointers, and she also collected six rebounds and four steals. The Warriors shot 39.1% for the game, making 27 of 69 shots.
The Muskies look to rebound next weekend with a two-day series at Edgewood College, with games in Madison at 7 p.m. on Friday and 5 p.m. Saturday.
