Muskies tame Lions in final non-conference matchup

HANCOCK, Mich. – The Lakeland University men's basketball team topped the 100-point mark for the third time in a week and the second time in that span against Finlandia (Mich.) University, as four Muskies scored in double figures in a 108-72 victory in a non-conference contest Tuesday night.

Lakeland went on a 12-0 run early in the first half to take its first lead of the game and never looked back in improving to 7-5 overall on the season. Finlandia lost its twelfth straight to LU and fell to 0-6 overall.

The Lions held the advantage in the first two and a half minutes, but Lakeland took its first lead at 9-7 on a layup by Aiden Polzin (Fr.-Clintonville, Wis.), and that triggered a run of twelve unanswered points over a stretch of 3 minutes, 54 seconds to take a 19-7 lead. The Muskies never trailed again and built a 49-32 lead by halftime.

Finlandia did start off hot in the second half, scoring five of the first seven points while cutting Lakeland's lead to 12 at 51-39. The Muskies snuffed their comeback attempt with a 16-3 run, though, that increased Lakeland's lead to 67-42 just over five minutes into the half. Lakeland led by as much as 41 with 1:43 left as the Muskies closed out a second lopsided win over the Lions, seven days after a 101-66 win at home.

Lakeland shot well throughout the game, making 41 of 75 (54.7%) from the field, including 11 of 26 (42.3%) from three-point range. The Muskies also had a significant edge in the paint, outscoring the Lions 56-34, and balanced their inside play with strong outside shooting in the second half, sinking 8 of 13 (61.5%) three-pointers.

Cam Jaeger (Fr.-Oostburg, Wis.) led Lakeland's double-figure scorers with 22 points, with Trenton Nickel (Sr.-Kiel, Wis.) adding 20 points for his third 20-point game this season. Polzin, fresh off winning the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Player of the Week award Tuesday, also recorded a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds, and Greg Barber (Sr.-Miami, Fla.) had his best game as a Muskie to date scoring 16 points and grabbing a team-high 12 rebounds.

Noah Prestia led Finlandia with 12 points, Jahmad Hines totaled 10 points and five rebounds, and Rae'quan Funches grabbed a team-high seven rebounds in the loss. The Lions struggled from the field, making just 26 of 81 (32.1%) shots including 7 of 25 (28.0%) from beyond the arc.

Lakeland wraps up the regular season this weekend with two games against rival Marian University, the first coming this Friday for a 5 p.m. tip-off in Fond du Lac.
