Lakeland clamps down late to shake off Alverno

MILWAUKEE – The Lakeland University women's basketball team held Alverno College without a field goal for the game's final 11 minutes, 22 seconds, and finally shook off the Inferno late for a 58-36 win Tuesday night in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference game.

The Muskies finished the game on a 19-2 run, including outscoring Alverno 12-1 in the final quarter. Lakeland snapped a four-game losing streak, getting its first win in more than three weeks and improving to 3-5 on the season and 2-5 in the NACC North Division.

The Muskies led almost the entire way, including for the game's final 33 minutes, but had to fend off a stubborn effort from the winless Inferno (0-9 overall, 0-9 NACC North). Alverno cut Lakeland's 15-point second quarter lead down to five late in the third period before the Muskies pulled away at the end to top the Inferno for the ninth straight time.

Lakeland outscored the Inferno 34-14 in the paint and went inside in the second half after Alverno started to close in. Twenty-four of Lakeland's 28 second half points came inside or at the free throw line, including a stretch of eight straight field goals.

Alverno got within five on two occasions in the third quarter, the second time on a three-pointer by Courtney Zarda making it 39-34 with 1:23 left in the period. Ellie Felsinger (So.-Cedar Grove, Wis.) finished the quarter scoring seven of the Muskies' final nine points, and her three-point play with four seconds left in the quarter gave Lakeland a 46-35 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

The Muskies followed with another three-point play to start the fourth by Kacey Gardner (Jr.-Evergreen Park, Ill.), and Gardner and Felsinger followed with consecutive layups inside to cap a 12-0 run for a 53-35 lead. The Inferno would finish with just a single free throw for their only point in the final quarter and finished the game missing their final 12 shots from the field.

Both teams started the game slowly and were tied at 4-4 late in the first quarter when Hayley Walding (Jr.-Bradenton, Fla.) scored on a layup. The Muskies would never trail again, would lead by as much as 15 in the first half at 27-12 after a hoop inside by Morgan Zenon (Jr.-Twin Lakes, Wis.) and took a 30-20 lead into halftime.

Megan Will (Sr.-Lake Mills, Wis.) scored 13 points and added 12 rebounds and four blocked shots to lead Lakeland in all three categories. Felsinger also chipped in 11 points off the bench and Gardner and Walding added nine points each. Alexa Yost (Fr.-Menasha, Wis.) also added five points plus eight rebounds and Walding finished with a team-high four assists.

The Muskies shot 35.4% for the game, making 23 of 65 shots. Lakeland also outrebounded Alverno 46-39 and held the Inferno to 26.4% shooting (14 of 53). Vorian Wilcox led the hosts with 13 points.

Lakeland and Alverno will meet for the second straight night again tomorrow at 7 p.m. in Milwaukee, part of the Muskies' stretch of four games in five nights this week that also will include their final two home games of the season Friday and Saturday against Marian University.
