A rally from two sets down came up just short as the Lakeland University women's volleyball team fell to Milwaukee School of Engineering in five sets Sunday morning at the Kern Center in Milwaukee.
The Raiders closed out the match with a flourish to post a 25-15, 25-21, 19-25, 17-25, 15-11 victory. The Muskies dropped to 0-3 overall and in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play after their second five-set loss of the season.
Lakeland struggled with consistency on the attack, hitting. 066 for the match with 45 kills but 32 errors. The Muskies hit .025 or worse in three sets, losing all three including the final set.
Despite all of that, Lakeland still was just five points away from victory in the fifth set after rallying from a 7-2 deficit to take the lead. The Muskies scored five consecutive for a 10-9 lead after a Raiders attack error, but MSOE rebounded after a timeout to finish the match on a 6-1 run and clinch the victory.
MSOE won its season opener hitting .151 with 49 kills and 23 errors. The Raiders also withstood 12 service aces for Lakeland, with nine different players recording at least one ace.
Abby Baumgartner (
Sr.-Kewaunee, Wis.) led Lakeland with 14 kills with
Megan Goeser (
Sr.-Plymouth, Wis.) adding nine kills and
Kelly Swope (
Fr.-Heyworth, Ill.) chipping in seven kills.
Neenah Primas (
Sr.-Oostburg, Wis.) totaled 37 assists and
Sydney Pingitore (
Jr.-Kenosha, Wis.) piled up 29 digs.
Maeve Sullivan (
Chicago, Ill.) also added 14 digs and
Emily Bringer (
Jr.-Round Lake, Ill.) notched a career-high 13 digs.
Quinn Borchert led MSOE with 13 kills and Emma Braun finished with 23 digs to lead a trio of Raiders with at least 20 digs.
Lakeland now prepares for its home opener when it will welcome Marian University this coming Sunday for a doubleheader starting at noon.
