UW-Oshkosh big bats lead to sweep of Muskies in softball doubleheader

A Lakeland University lead evaporated in the late going as the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh rallied in the final innings to win the second game of a doubleheader and complete a sweep of the Muskies in non-conference play Thursday afternoon.

The Titans scored four times in the fifth inning to erase a 4-2 deficit and went on to win 7-4 in the second game of the twinbill. UW-Oshkosh also posted a 19-4 win in six innings in the first game, claiming both ends of the doubleheader on a cold, windy afternoon.

The Muskies (0-8 overall) remained winless on the season despite playing well most of the second game in particular. Lakeland fought back from an early 2-0 deficit to score four times over the third and fourth innings to take a 4-2 lead.

Hannah Hornsby (Jr.-Brookville, Ind.) got the Muskies on the board with an RBI single to score Juliana Hall (So.-Portage, Ind.) in the third inning and Hall added a two-run single in the fourth that put Lakeland ahead for the first time on the day at 4-2.

The visiting Titans (6-2 overall) would rally in their next at bat, though, scoring four times in the fifth inning. Lakeland helped UW-Oshkosh out with three errors in the inning that resulted in four unearned runs, and the go-ahead run scoring on a two-run single by Kailee Garstecki for a 6-4 lead.

The Muskies put two runners on in the sixth inning when Hannah Nelson (Fr.-Loves Park, Ill.) walked and Cheyenne Mathas (Jr.-St. John, Ind.) singled, but never pushed a runner past second base. UWO added a run in the top of the seventh and Lakeland went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the seventh to close out the game.

The Titans also broke out to an early lead in the opener, scoring four times in the top of the fifth inning. The Muskies answered with three in the bottom of the first, as Hornsby reached on a fielder's choice to score Nelson, Ally Lira (Sr.-???, Ill.) walked with the bases loaded to drive in Hornsby, and Hall scored on a passed ball after a dropped third strike.

UW-Oshkosh would score two more in the second, three in the third and two more in the fourth to build an 11-3 lead. Lakeland had few answers, with its only remaining run coming in the fourth when Jacy Klaske (Jr.-Fond du Lac, Wis.) scored on a wild pitch. The Titans then put the game well out of reach with eight runs in the sixth inning, when 13 batters came to the plate and eight reached on hits.

The Muskies finished with 11 hits over the two games, with Nelson leading the way with three hits and two runs scored. Hall added two hits and three runs batted in and Mathas and Sabrina Wickman (Sr.-Quinnesec, Mich.) added two hits each.

Leah Binsfeld (Sr.-Kaukauna, Wis.) pitched a complete game in the nightcap, allowing 10 hits and seven runs (three earned) with two strikeouts.

Natalie Dudek led UW-Oshkosh with five hits, three runs scored and two RBIs. Sidney Budzinski added two hits and four runs driven in and Amanda McIlhany hit safely four times and drove in three runs. Garstecki also drove in four runs.

Lakeland is back on the field Saturday when it hosts Concordia University Chicago for two games starting at noon.
