Rivers runs to new all-time rushing mark as Muskies handle Regents

ROCKFORD, Ill. – Larry Rivers (Sr.-Dearborn Heights, Mich.) set the new Lakeland University school record for career rushing yards and the Muskies won the second straight game in their spring season with a 35-7 win at Rockford University Saturday afternoon at Sam Greeley Field.

The Muskies took the lead just before halftime and were dominant in the second half for the second straight week, outscoring the Regents 21-0 after the break to improve to 2-0 overall and in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference North Division. Rockford dropped to 0-2 overall and in the NAC North.

Rivers rushed for 76 yards and a touchdown, finishing the day with 2,948 career yards on the ground to surpass former teammate Dezmon Eddie's career total of 2,915 yards. Rivers came into the game needing 43 yards to tie Eddie's mark, and after rushing for 21 yards in the first half he set the new mark on his first run of the third quarter, when he broke free for 34 yards.

Lakeland also got another big game from senior quarterback Charl'Tez Nunnery (Liberty, Miss.), who accounted for four touchdowns. Nunnery passed for 179 yards and three touchdowns and also was the team's leading rusher with 98 yards and another score.

His first touchdown pass came on the opening drive of the game, when the Muskies went 65 yards in nine plays and Nunnery hit Brice Kensey (Sr.-New Orleans, La.) for a three-yard score and a 7-0 lead. His second TD came with 50 seconds left in the first half, when he found Mason Prunick (Sr.-Sheboygan, Wis.) over the middle for a 20-yard touchdown that gave Lakeland the lead for good at 14-7.

Nunnery added an 11-yard rushing touchdown early in the third quarter and then added his third touchdown pass hitting Jaylen Rido (Jr.-Houston, Texas) for a 33-yard touchdown and a 28-7 lead late in the third quarter.

Rivers added the final score of the day with a 26-yard score in the fourth quarter, capping an 11-play, 98-yard drive.

Nunnery completed 14 of 26 passes, hooking up with Kensey nine times for 86 yards and Rido three times for 80 yards. The Muskies finished with 401 yards of total offense and were balanced with 210 yards on the ground and 191 yards passing.

The Lakeland defense kept Rockford in check much of the way, holding the hosts to 297 yards of offense. The Regents ran the ball 49 times but averaged just 3.0 yards per carry, and also committed three turnovers.

Rockford's lone touchdown came near the midway point of the second quarter, when Emani Johnson carried it in from two yards out to tie the game at 7-7, capping a 15-play, 54-yard drive the chewed 7 minutes, 33 seconds off the clock.

Shazon Crutcher (Sr.-Lansing, Mich.) led the defense with 14 tackles (six solo, eight assisted). Ezekiel Combs (Sr.-East Point, Ga.) also added 11 tackles. Jayson Wilder (So.-Milwaukee, Wis.) and Max Ramminger (So.-Kiel, Wis.) also both added interceptions, including Ramminger's first career pick.

Lakeland is back on the road next week when it travels to face Wisconsin Lutheran College at 1 p.m. on April 3 in Milwaukee.
