KOHLER, Wis. – The Lakeland University women's tennis team dominated from the top flights on down to win its season-opening dual with Alverno College Saturday morning at Sports Core.
The Muskies won all nine matches in their first match of the 2020-21 season, coming in the spring after the fall season was postponed by the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference.
Freshman
Baylee Babcock (
Mauston, Wis.) was a double-winner competing at No. 1 flights in singles and doubles. Babcock defeated Maisheng Thor 6-1, 6-0 in single and teamed with
Sadie Conway (
Fr.-Monroe, Wis.) for an 8-1 win over Thor and Monse Sanchez-Gutierrez.
Conway had the closest call of the day but still defeated Kalei Hanna -4, 6-4 at No. 2 singles.
Kallie Hoeft (
So.-Cascade, Wis.) also topped Merub Irfan 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3 singles and
Jessica Leicht (
Jr.-Sheboygan Falls, Wis.) defeated Liz Carranco 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4 singles. Hoft and Leicht also cruised past Carranco and Hanna 8-2 at No. 2 doubles.
Bobainah Cha (
So.-Milwaukee, Wis.) also defeated Michal Irfan 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5 singles while
Morgan Erbstoesser (
So.-Union, Ill.) prevailed over Sanchez-Gutierrez 6-2, 6-1 at No. 6 singles. Cha and Erbstoesser also defeated Irfan and Irfan 8-3 at No. 3 doubles.
Lakeland returns to NACC in full when it gets back to play April 7 to face Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago.
