MILWAUKEE –
Faith Turley (
Fr.-Lincoln, Ill.) scored her first two collegiate goals and the Lakeland University women's soccer team surged in the second half to defeat Alverno College 4-0 Wednesday afternoon.
The Muskies scored all four of their goals after halftime and went on to defeat the Inferno for the second time this season. Lakeland improved to 2-2 overall and is 2-2 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference North Division.
Turley scored the first two goals for the Muskies, coming less than 10 minute apart in the second half. Her first came at 52:23 of the match thanks to the efforts of three teammates.
Ellie Rau (
Fr.-West Allis, Wis.) made the first play, first stepping in near midfield to poke the ball away from an Alverno attacker and to
Riley Jahnke (
Fr.-Howards Grove, Wis.), who then played the ball ahead on the right to
Haley Rich (
So.-West Chicago, Ill.). Rich had space and took two dribbles before sending a short pass to Turley, who shielded a defender, turned and beat goalkeeper Kenzie Bermudez with a shot across goal to the upper left corner.
Turley's second goal came in the 63rd minute and directly off a corner kick by
Amanda Buckler (
Sr.-Sheridan, Wyo.). Turley had a clear run at the goal and needed just a single touch to deflect the ball off Bermudez and into the goal for a 2-0 lead.
Lakeland added another goal just over six minutes later with another freshman scoring, as
Desiree Jacobson (
???, Mich.) tallied her first collegiate goal.
Abby Gastrau (
Jr.-Hubertus, Wis.) played a pass ahead from midfield on the left side to Jacobson, who got behind the defense and to the keeper Bermudez, who came out of the goal and initially knocked it away, but not far enough as Jacobson collected again and hit the open net.
The Muskies final goal came in the 87th minute shortly after a corner kick.
Alani Chairez (
Fr.-Milwaukee, Wis.) had the first crack at the corner but her shot was knocked away by an Alverno defender. The ball bounced to
Rachel Wilson (
Sr.-Gilbert, Ariz.), who had pushed up from her defender position and was in position on the left for a shot that glanced off the inside of the left post and into the net for her second career goal.
Erin Tomlinson (
Jr.-Madison, Wis.) secured the shutout for Lakeland, stopping six shots for the win. Four came in the second half, when Alverno attempted six of its eight shots total.
Lakeland finished with an advantage in possession, outshooting the Inferno 24-8.
Marlen Reyes Robelo (
Fr.-Milwaukee, Wis.) led the Muskies with four shot attempts, and 11 different players registered at least one shot attempt.
Lakeland is right back on the field on Friday when it travels to face Edgewood College at 2 p.m.
