No. 13-ranked MSOE takes two from Muskies to open weekend softball series

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Lakeland University softball team struggled offensively mustering one run over two games in a pair of losses to nationally ranked Milwaukee School of Engineering Saturday afternoon.

The Raiders stopped the Muskies 2-0 in game one as Lorrin Pondo pitched a complete game shutout. Pondo then returned to throw four more scoreless innings in a 6-1 victory in the second game for MSOE, which came in ranked 13th in the latest NFCA/NCAA Division III top 25 coaches poll.

MSOE improved to 21-2 overall and 8-1 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference North Division with the wins, while Lakeland saw its four-game winning streak snapped and dropped to 6-17-1 overall and 5-5 in division play.

The Raiders scored what proved to be the game-winning run in the second inning of game one when Jocelyn Clod singled to left to drive in Jenna Trewyn. MSOE added an insurance run on an RBI single by Kara McKenna in the fifth inning.

Pondo outdueled Lakeland's Leah Binsfeld (Sr.-Kaukauna, Wis.) in a pair of strong complete game pitching performances. Pondo allowed four hits and struck out 12, allowing just two runners to get in scoring position throughout the game. Binsfeld allowed nine hits and two runs and struck out two in the loss.

Game two began with a bit of déjà vu as Clod once again brought in the first run of the game in the second inning, and McKenna doubled to left two batters later to extend the lead to 3-0. Lakeland got on the board in the fourth inning when Maddie Blankenship (Jr.-West Bend, Wis.) and Jacy Klaske (Jr.-Fond du Lac, Wis.) executed a double-steal, with Klaske stealing home to cut the Muskies' deficit to 3-1.

The Muskies would not score again, though, and MSOE tacked on three more runs in the fifth inning with Trewyn and Pache both singling in runs.

Pondo pitched 11 innings total for the Raiders, allowing just five hits and one walk while striking out 16 batters.

Hannah Nelson (Fr.-Loves Park, Ill.) started the second game for Lakeland and allowed six runs (five earned) on 11 hits with a walk and a strikeout in four innings. Mikayla Armatoski (So.-Columbus, Wis.) finished the game with two scoreless innings, allowing just one hit.

The Muskies' pitchers also provided the best offense of the day, as Nelson finished with four hits in the doubleheader, including two in each game. Binsfeld also added three hits, including two in the nightcap. Cheyenne Mathas (Jr.-St. John, Ind.) picked up the Muskies' lone extra-base hit with a double in game two.

The teams meet again tomorrow when Lakeland hosts MSOE for two games starting at noon.
