The Lakeland University softball team once again put up plenty of runs but came up empty in the win column in a doubleheader against Edgewood College Friday afternoon.
The Eagles won the first game of the twinbill 10-3 and then held on for a 12-9 victory in the second game on a bright but chilly Good Friday. Lakeland dropped to 1-12-1 overall on the season heading into the open of the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference North Division schedule starting Saturday against Marian University.
The Muskies hammered out 24 hits over the two games, and especially came alive in the second game. Lakeland rallied from an eight-run deficit to tie the game, but the Eagles (9-15 overall) had the last word pulling back ahead late.
Edgewood scored four times to open the second game and added another run in the second and three more in the third to take an 8-0 lead. The Muskies answered back with five runs in the bottom of the third, all coming with two out and highlighted by
Hannah Hornsby (
Jr.-Brookville, Ind.) hitting a bases-clearing three-run double.
Ariana Brown (
So.-Beloit, Wis.) and
Gabby Greetan (
So.-Manitowoc, Wis.) also added RBI singles to cut the Eagles' lead to 8-5.
Lakeland also scored three more times in the fourth to tie the game.
Hannah Nelson (
Fr.-Loves Park, Ill.) singled in a run and scored later by taking home as part of a double-steal, and
Cheyenne Mathas (
Jr.-St. John, Ind.) followed with an RBI double to score
Maddie Blankenship (
Jr.-West Bend, Wis.) and tie the score at 8-8.
The Eagles came back with three runs in the top of the fifth, and Lakeland could add only one more run the rest of the way, coming when
Nyah Odekirk (
Fr.-Fond du Lac, Wis.) grounded out to score
Emyli Kreiser (
Jr.-Greenfield, Wis.) after her booming lead-off double off the top of the wall in center field. The Muskies would bring the tying run to the plate in the seventh after singles by Kreiser and
Carson Terry (
Fr.-Plainfield, Ill.), but the game ended on Nelson's fly out to center field.
Lakeland also posted 11 hits in Friday's first game, but was not as opportunistic and also played from behind almost from the start. Edgewood scored seven times in the top of the first inning, highlighted by a three-run home run by Emily Bloomfield, and the Muskies could never get closer than four the rest of the game.
Mathas and
Ally Lira (
Sr.-Elk Grove Village, Ill.) both singled to drive in runs and
Juliana Hall (
So.-Portage, Ind.) added a sacrifice fly to drive in a run. Lakeland stranded 10 runners, though, including at least one in every inning.
Mathas finished with four hits on the day and Brown added three hits over the two games. Lira also went 2-for-3 in the first game, while
Leah Binsfield (
Sr.-Kaukauna, Wis.) was 2-for-2 with a run scored in the second game.
Marissa Varela (
So.-Calumet City, Ill.) came on in relief in the first game and steadied the pitching, going 6 2/3 innings and allowing six hits and three earned runs with six strikeouts.
Mikayla Armatoski (
So.-Columbus, Wis.) threw three innings in relief in the second game and allowed four hits and a run with two strikeouts.
Haylee Kasuboski led Edgewood with a pair of three-hit games while Bloomfield added five hits and six runs batted in on the day. Lauren Ludvigsen pitched a complete game in the opener, striking out two, while Analiese Glawe pitched 3 2/3 innings to pick up the win in relief in the second game, allowing four hits and a run and fanning five.
The Muskies take on Marian Saturday for two games starting at 1 p.m. in Fond du Lac.
