PLYMOUTH, Wis. –
Gabby Greetan (
Jr.-Manitowoc, Wis.) drove in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning of the first game and the Lakeland University softball team heated up at the plate in the second game to complete a doubleheader sweep of Mount Mary University Tuesday afternoon.
The Muskies pulled out a 1-0 win in the first game and then cruised to a 9-1 victory in six innings in the second to complete the sweep. Lakeland extended its winning streak to four games and improved to 11-18-1 overall after winning its final non-conference date of the season.
Greetan's one-out grounder to the right side to score
Emyli Kreiser (
So.-Greenfield, Wis.) from third was the difference in the opener, ending a dandy pitchers' duel between Lakeland's
Madi Johnson (
Fr.-Vernon Hills, Ill.) and Mount Mary pitcher Brianna Lupa.
Both Johnson and Lupa were dominant through six innings, and aided by a stiff wind blowing in the two combined to allow just seven hits, and the hard-throwing Lupa struck out seven for Mount Mary (6-21 overall) and allowed just two hits through six innings.
With the game seemingly ticketed for extra innings, though, the Muskies started the winning rally with a walk to Kreiser, and put runners at first and second with no outs when Johnson then fought off a tough pitch from Lupa to hit a grounder through the hole on the left side for a base hit.
Maddie Blankenship (
Jr.-West Bend, Wis.) followed with a sacrifice bunt to move up both runners, and Greetan got the job done pinch hitting with a grounder against a drawn-in infield that still scored Kreiser easily from third for the winning run.
The run gave Johnson her first collegiate shutout, a four-hitter with five strikeouts and two walks. She only allowed one runner to get as far as third base, in the second inning before she retired the final two batters of the inning, and with the performance lowered her earned run average to a team-best 3.25.
Lupa pitched again in the second game but the Muskies had much more success, scoring three runs in the first inning, two more in the second and putting up 11 hits total in a convincing win.
Cheyenne Mathas (
Jr.-St. John, Ind.) went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored,
Jacy Klaske (
Jr.-Fond du Lac, Wis.) added two hits and drove in a run and eight different players recorded a hit. Kreiser delivered the game-ending hit with a drive to right over the head of right fielder Jacklyn Mozdzen for a triple that scored
Juliana Hall (
So.-Portage, Ind.) and then Mathas with the run to end the game on the eight-run rule.
Hannah Nelson (
Fr.-Loves Park, Ill.) was the winning pitcher in the second game, allowing just four hits and one run in six innings. She also went 1-for-2 at the plate with two walks and two runs scored and finished with three stolen bases, raising her team-leading total to 16 steals for the season.
Kreiser finished the day reaching base five times over two games, including a pair of hits plus three walks and two runs scored.
Sabrina Wickman (
Sr.-Quinnesec, Mich.) also added two hits on the day and two runs scored.
Lakeland closes out the home portion of its season Friday when it hosts Concordia University Wisconsin for a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference North Division doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
