PLYMOUTH, Wis. –
Kidus Samson (
Fr.-San Francisco, Calif.) scored twice in the second half and the Lakeland University men's soccer team found a way even down a man to defeat Edgewood College 3-0 in Saturday afternoon's home finale at Taylor Field.
The Muskies played the final 54 minutes with just 10 men on the field after a first half red card but scored three times in the second half to win for the second time this season. Lakeland improved to 2-2-1 overall and in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference North Division and has multiple conference wins for the first time since 2016.
After Lakeland and Edgewood played to a 2-2 tie just a week and a half earlier, the two teams appeared to be destined for a similar outcome after a scoreless first half. Lakeland's
Joseph Burkett (
So.-Long Beach, Calif.) was given a red card at 35 minutes, 27 seconds of the match, putting the Muskies down a man for the rest of the game and seemingly giving Edgewood momentum going into the second half.
Alessandro Bianchi (
So.-Venice, Italy) changed that, though, as his shot from the right side of the penalty box in the 57th minute found the left corner of the net and gave the Muskies a 1-0 lead. The Muskies would score again just 1:25 later, as Samson took a pass from
Michecadet Gethand (
Fr.-West Bend, Wis.) and found the back of the net from an almost identical spot to increase the lead to 2-0.
That momentum was all a shorthanded Lakeland squad would need as it kept the Eagles (0-5-1 overall, 0-5-1 NACC North) off the board. The Muskies added an insurance goal late as Samson notched his second goal with 3:24 left in the match.
Lizandro Jimenez (
Jr.-Milwaukee, Wis.) tapped a free kick back to him, and he buried a blast into the top left corner of the net for the 3-0 lead.
Carson Galla (
Fr.-Deerfield, Wis.) secured his second shutout of the season by picking up nine saves in the win, while Edgewood's Brendon Martin saved one shot. The Eagles finished with a 9-8 edge in shot attempts and a 9-4 lead in shots on goal.
Lakeland gets two days off before taking a midweek trip to Milwaukee to play Milwaukee School of Engineering at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
