PLYMOUTH, Wis. – Lakeland University battled Beloit College for a full 110 minutes but the teams were still unable to settle their contest which finished in a scoreless tie Friday night at Taylor Field.
The Muskies played to a draw in their 2021 season home opener in a match that lacked for scoring but not action. The teams went back and forth all night and both had golden chances but were unable to cash in.
The third overtime contest in five all-time meetings between the schools nearly ended in the favor of Lakeland (0-1-1 overall) in the second overtime.
Brendan Perry (
Fr.-New Baltimore, Mich.) picked up a turnover in the Beloit end and carried the ball into the keeper's area from the far right side, where he fired a laser from 10 yards out from a sharp angle that hit the near post, then ricocheted just past
Michecadet Gethand (
So.-Jackson, Wis.) running on for a rebound in front of an open net.
The Buccaneers (2-1-1 overall) had the nearest miss for either team midway through the first half. A crossing pass in the box in front of the goal got through a defender to Deji Agunbiade, who from 12 yards out fired a shot that hit the left post and then shot across the line to hit the right post before corralled by
Zach Heiman (
So.-Racine, Wis.) before it went over the line.
Heiman also had the save of the night in the first overtime, when a service into the box was headed first by Derek Veenstra and then by Conor Waldron, whose shot was ticketed for just inside the crossbar before Heiman leaped to deflect it just over the bar.
Beloit finished with a 14-8 advantage in shot attempts including a 6-2 advantage in the overtimes. Three came in the final minute of the second overtime, when the guests made a final push but Heiman handled all three shots.
Gethand finished with four of the Muskies' six shots, including a pair of shots on goal.
Michael Barragan (
So.-Milwaukee, Wis.) and
Ezra Johnson (
Fr.-De Pere, Wis.) also added single shots each from forward spots.
Heiman made six saves for his first collegiate shutout. Bidwell made three saves for Beloit, which was playing its third straight game against Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference schools and previously defeated Concordia University Wisconsin before falling to Wisconsin Lutheran College on Wednesday.
Lakeland is home again Monday night when it welcomes Finlandia (Mich.) University for a 7 p.m. kickoff at Taylor Field.
