Baylee Babcock (
So.-Mauston, Wis.) led a strong performance in singles play with a dominant two-set win and the Lakeland University women's tennis team earned its first win of the season, topping Alverno College 6-3 Saturday morning in Milwaukee.
The Muskies opened their Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference slate with a victory and finished the first day of conference play with a split after falling to Concordia University Wisconsin 9-0 in Mequon in the second dual of the day. Lakeland is now 1-2 overall on the season.
The Muskies opened winning just one of three close doubles matches against the Inferno, with
Clare Kelnhofer (
Fr.-Brandon, Wis.) and
Jessica Leicht (
Sr.-Sheboygan Falls, Wis.) edging Merub Irfan and Sierra Hunstable 8-6 at No. 3 doubles. Lakeland would take charge in singles matches, though, winning five of six including Babcock topping Irfan 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles.
Sadie Conway (
So.-Monroe, Wis.) also defeated Morgan Golabowski 7-5, 6-1 at No. 2 singles, and Leicht was the lone double-winner of the day after topping Elizabeth Wolf-Nowakowski 6-4, 6-1 at No. 4 singles.
Bobainah Cha (
Jr.-Milwaukee, Wis.) also topped Alaina Kamalian at No. 5 singles by a 6-1, 6-2 score and
Morgan Erbstoesser (
Jr.-Union, Ill.) added a 6-2, 6-3 win over Michal Irfan at No. 6 singles.
The Muskies had a much tougher go against Concordia (5-0 overall), the defending NACC champions who are already off to a 4-0 start in conference. The Falcons won all nine matches while losing no more than two games in any match at singles or doubles.
Babcock and Leicht had the best performances in singles, both winning two games in losses. The top doubles score came from Cha and
Kallie Hoeft (
Jr.-Cascade, Wis.), who fell 8-2 to Auden Pearson and Mya Werning at No. 2 doubles.
Lakeland is back on the court Sunday when it hosts Illinois Institute of Technology for its home opener at Sports Core in Kohler at 10 a.m.
