Series: 15th meeting, Lakeland leads 11-3
The series between Lakeland and Wisconsin Lutheran began in 2001 and became a regular on the schedule when the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference started football in 2008. The Muskies have won the last four meetings, one of them coming earlier this year when Lakeland drilled WLC 62-14 on the road on April 3 during the NACC's abbreviated spring season. The Muskies built a 48-7 lead by halftime with six touchdowns of 36 yards or more and Charl'Tez Nunnery threw for 336 yards and four touchdowns and rushed for 102 yards and another score. Lakeland also won the most recent matchup at home, a 39-6 victory Oct. 26, 2019, as Larry Rivers rushed for 211 yards, Rayshion Brumfield returned an interception 77 yards for a touchdown and Lakeland held WLC to 107 yards of offense. Wisconsin Lutheran's last win over the Muskies came almost five years ago, with a 50-34 victory Oct. 22, 2016. That game was played at Sheboygan North High School's Urban Field, after Lakeland's final home games that season were moved due to its then-grass field turning to mud and becoming unplayable after a Cheese Bowl win in the rain over Concordia Wisconsin.

Lakeland last time out: Won at Anderson (Ind.) 54-41
The Muskies picked up their second straight road win to open the season, using big plays and a huge middle two quarters to down the Ravens. Lakeland scored 34 points in a span of just over 13 minutes over the second and third quarters, turning a 17-14 deficit late in the second quarter into a 48-19 lead by the end of the third. Mason Prunick had a career day wtih 133 yards receiving and three touchdown catches, Charl'Tez Nunnery threw for four touchdowns and ran for another and Larry Rivers gained 145 yards on just 13 carries in another big offensive performance with 536 yards of total offense. The Muskies defense also limited Anderson to 236 yards, including a net of 10 yards in 36 rush attempts.

Wisconsin Lutheran last time out: Lost at Martin Luther (Minn.) 42-28
The Warriors were unable to stop the Knights' run-heavy option attack, as Martin Luther gained 363 of its 383 yards on the ground and scored touchdowns on six of its first eight possessions. Martin Luther never trailed in the game, taking a 14-0 lead early in the second quarter and scoring three unanswered touchdowns after WLC had closed within 21-14 at halftime. Nick Yockey threw for 141 yards and a touchdown and Matthew Davis added 99 yards and two touchdowns passing in relief in the fourth quarter.

About the Warriors: Wisconsin Lutheran is 0-2 this season after also falling to Lake Forest in its season opener. The Warriors are in their first full playing season under Eric Treske, a WLC grad and a familiar face to Muskies football who took over for longtime coach Dr. Dennis Miller after spending seven years at Lakeland, the last five as offensive coordinator. The offense has been productive in Treske's first five games as head coach, averaging nearly 400 yards per game in the spring and this fall after averaging 270.3 yards of offense in 2019 (210th of 245 NCAA Division III schools) in the year before his arrival.

Muskies on Homecoming: Homecoming has far more often than not in the past been a very good day for Lakeland football. The Muskies have a superb 59-21-3 all-time record in Homecoming games, and in the last such game two years ago routed Concordia Wisconsin 44-0 on Oct. 12, 2019 to improve to 12-1 in their last 13 Homecoming games. Lakeland also is 4-0 all-time against Wisconsin Lutheran on Homecoming, including a 47-7 win Oct. 4, 2014 plus a 40-34 overtime win the year before on Oct. 5, 2013, a game that was delayed several hours due to lightning.

Not just offense: The Muskies offense has put up flashy numbers in the air and on the ground so far, averaging more than 500 yards over two games, but the defense also is putting up some big numbers of its own. Lakeland has 12 sacks through two games, fourth-most in NCAA Division III, and Chris Daniels and Otis Watts both already have three sacks each. The Muskies also already have 24 tackles for loss, a number that also ranks sixth in Division III. D'Jimon Stuckey leads the team with four TFLs already, and 14 different players have at least one-half TFL through two games.

More superlatives for Rivers: Larry Rivers is off to another big start in his final season. The Muskies' all-time leading rusher has 312 yards through two games, fifth-most in Division III coming into Saturday. His 161.0 rushing yards per game is also sixth, but his 8.5 yards per carry also ranks sixth in D-III. The senior's 191.0 all-purpose yards per game, including receiving yardage, ranks 12th nationally.

NACC opening weekend: This is the first weekend of play in the NACC, with four games taking place and only new member St. Norbert with the weekend off. Lakeland was picked fourth in the conference's preseason poll of league coaches and sports information directors, behind Aurora, St. Norbert and Benedictine. Wisconsin Lutheran was picked seventh in the poll. The Muskies joined Concordia Chicago and Concordia Wisconsin as the lone teams to be 2-0 after their first two games, and next week they'll host St. Norbert for its first-ever conference game as a NACC member.
